Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अब्रवीत् मधुरम् वाक्यम् विश्वामित्रम् तपो धनम् ।
महर्षे स्वागतम् वत्स तपसा उग्रेण तोषितः ॥१-६३-१८॥
abravīt madhuram vākyam viśvāmitram tapo dhanam |
maharṣe svāgatam vatsa tapasā ugreṇa toṣitaḥ ॥1-63-18॥
Translation
He spoke sweet words to Vishvamitra, whose wealth was his penance: "O Maharishi! Welcome, my child. I am gratified by your fierce penance."
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन्होंने तपोधनी विश्वामित्र से मधुर वचनों में कहा—"हे महर्षि! हे वत्स! तुम्हारा स्वागत है। मैं तुम्हारी उग्र तपस्या से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हूँ।"
English Commentary
Brahma addresses Vishvamitra with affection (vatsa) and respect, acknowledging his "wealth of asceticism" (tapo dhanam). The phrase "sweet words" indicates Brahma's role as a benevolent guide rather than a harsh judge. He explicitly validates the severity (ugrena) of the penance. However, the address "O Maharishi" confirms that while the penance is sufficient to please Brahma, it is not yet sufficient to grant the status of a knower of Brahman (Brahmarishi). This moment serves as both a reward and a subtle indication that the journey is not yet complete.

ब्रह्मा जी का व्यवहार यहाँ अत्यंत स्नेहपूर्ण और प्रोत्साहन देने वाला है। वे विश्वामित्र को 'वत्स' (पुत्र) कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो उनकी वात्सल्य भावना को दर्शाता है। 'तपो धनम्' विशेषण बताता है कि अब विश्वामित्र के पास भौतिक धन नहीं, बल्कि तप रूपी धन है। ब्रह्मा जी ने 'उग्र तप' की सराहना की, जो यह संकेत देता है कि विश्वामित्र ने अपनी शारीरिक और मानसिक सीमाओं को पार कर लिया है। तथापि, संबोधन में 'महर्षि' शब्द का प्रयोग विश्वामित्र के लिए मिश्रित भावनाओं वाला क्षण है।
