ऊर्ध्व बाहुः निरालंबो वायु भक्षः तपः चरन् ।
धर्मे पंच तपा भूत्वा वर्षासु आकाश संश्रयः ॥१-६३-२३॥
ūrdhva bāhuḥ nirālaṃbo vāyu bhakṣaḥ tapaḥ caran |
gharme paṃca tapā bhūtvā varṣāsu ākāśa saṃśrayaḥ ॥1-63-23॥
Translation
...performed penance with arms raised, without support, feeding only on air. In summer, he stood amidst the five fires, and in the rainy season, he remained under the open sky.

...ऊपर हाथ किए, बिना किसी अवलंब (सहारे) के, केवल वायु का भक्षण करते हुए तप करने लगे। वे गर्मी में 'पंचाग्नि' तपते और वर्षा ऋतु में खुले आकाश के नीचे रहते।
English Commentary
Vishvamitra escalates his penance to extreme physical mortification. Standing "without support" (niralambo) and eating only air signifies total detachment from earthly sustenance. The verse describes the Panchatapa (Five Fires) ritual practiced in summer: sitting amidst four fires with the scorching sun as the fifth overhead. In the monsoon, he endures the downpour without shelter (akasha samshrayah). This systematic exposure to the extremes of elements is designed to burn away physical attachment and forge an unbreakable will.

विश्वामित्र ने अब और भी कठोर तप आरंभ किया। 'ऊर्ध्व बाहुः' (हाथ ऊपर रखना) एक कठिन हठयोग प्रक्रिया है। 'वायु भक्ष' का अर्थ है उन्होंने अन्न-जल का पूर्ण त्याग कर दिया। 'पंचाग्नि तप' का अर्थ है—चारों दिशाओं में अग्नि जलाकर और ऊपर से सूर्य के ताप को सहना। यह शारीरिक कष्ट सहने की पराकाष्ठा है। वे प्रकृति के द्वंद्वों (गर्मी, सर्दी, वर्षा) को जीतकर देह-बुद्धि से ऊपर उठने का प्रयास कर रहे थे।
