शिशिरे सलिले शायी रात्रि अहानि तपो धनः ।
एवम् वर्ष सहस्रम् हि तपो घोरम् उपागमत् ॥१-६३-२४॥
śiśire salile śāyī rātri ahāni tapo dhanaḥ |
evam varṣa sahasram hi tapo ghoram upāgamat ॥1-63-24॥
Translation
In the winter season, he slept in water both night and day. Thus, that ascetic performed terrible penance for one thousand years.

शिशिर (शीत) ऋतु में वे रात-दिन जल में शयन करते थे। इस प्रकार उस तपोधनी ने एक हजार वर्षों तक घोर तपस्या की।
English Commentary
Completing the cycle of seasons, the verse describes his austerity in winter (shishire), where he remained submerged in freezing water day and night. This practice is intended to conquer the sensation of touch and the body's instinct for comfort. The duration of "one thousand years" emphasizes the superhuman scale of his resolve. This is not merely physical endurance but a temporal conquest, accumulating vast spiritual merit (punya) through ghoram (terrible/fierce) discipline that terrifies lesser beings.

ग्रीष्म और वर्षा के बाद अब शीत ऋतु के तप का वर्णन है। कंपा देने वाली ठंड में जल के भीतर रहना इन्द्रिय निग्रह की परीक्षा है। 'रात्रि अहानि' (रात और दिन) निरंतरता को दर्शाता है। 'वर्ष सहस्रम्' (हजार वर्ष) यह बताता है कि यह क्षणिक आवेग नहीं, बल्कि एक दीर्घकालीन साधना थी। 'घोरम्' शब्द तपस्या की तीव्रता को रेखांकित करता है। विश्वामित्र समय (काल) और शरीर दोनों को जीतने की साधना में लीन थे।
