तस्मिन् संतप्यमाने तु विश्वामित्रे महामुनौ ।
संतापः सुमहान् आसीत् सुराणाम् वासवस्य च ॥१-६३-२५॥
tasmin saṃtapyamāne tu viśvāmitre mahāmunau |
saṃtāpaḥ sumahān āsīt surāṇām vāsavasya ca ॥1-63-25॥
Translation
While the great sage Vishvamitra was thus performing penance, great distress arose among the gods and Vasava (Indra).
हिंदी अनुवाद
महामुनि विश्वामित्र के इस प्रकार तप करने पर देवताओं और इंद्र (वासव) को महान संताप (घबराहट/कष्ट) हुआ।
English Commentary
The narrative shifts from the sage to the reaction of the celestials. The intensity of Vishvamitra's heat (tapas) manifests as distress (santapa) for the gods. Indra (referred to as Vasava) is particularly singled out because, in Hindu cosmology, he is the guardian of the status quo and views any intense accumulation of merit by a mortal as a threat to his sovereignty. Indra's anxiety serves as the catalyst for the next phase of the drama—the testing of the sage.

जैसे-जैसे विश्वामित्र का तप बढ़ा, वैसे-वैसे इन्द्र (वासव) की असुरक्षा बढ़ी। 'संताप' का अर्थ यहाँ मानसिक क्लेश और भय से है। इन्द्र को सदैव यह भय रहता है कि कोई तपस्वी अपने पुण्य के बल पर इन्द्रसन न प्राप्त कर ले। यहाँ विश्वामित्र का उद्देश्य ब्रह्मर्षि बनना है, इन्द्र बनना नहीं, परन्तु इन्द्र अपनी पद-लोलुपता के कारण आशंकित हैं। यह श्लोक आगामी विघ्न की भूमिका तैयार करता है।
