Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सुर कार्यम् इदम् रंभे कर्तव्यम् सुमहत् त्वया ।
लोभनम् कौशिकस्य इह काम मोह समन्वितम् ॥१-६४-१॥
sura kāryam idam raṃbhe kartavyam sumahat tvayā |
lobhanam kauśikasya iha kāma moha samanvitam ॥1-64-1॥
Translation
"O Rambha! You must perform this very great task for the gods. You must allure Kaushika (Vishvamitra) here, utilizing desire and delusion."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(इन्द्र बोले) "हे रंभे! तुम्हें देवताओं का यह अत्यंत महान कार्य करना है। तुम्हें काम और मोह का सहारा लेकर इस समय कौशिक (विश्वामित्र) को लुभाना है।"
English Commentary
Indra commands Rambha to execute a "great task for the gods," framing the sabotage of a sage as a divine duty. The strategy is explicit: use Kama (erotic desire) and Moha (delusion/infatuation) to seduce Vishvamitra. This marks the beginning of the temptation of Vishvamitra by Rambha. The verse underscores the antagonism between the Devas and the Ascetics. Indra directs her to target the very weakness Brahma pointed out earlier—the lack of total control over the senses. This is the pivotal moment that will lead to Vishvamitra's next fall (through anger, not lust this time) and subsequent rise.

इन्द्र रंभा को आदेश देते हैं कि वह विश्वामित्र की तपस्या भंग करे। इसे 'सुर कार्य' (देवताओं का कार्य) बताकर वे इसे एक कर्तव्य का रूप देते हैं, ताकि रंभा मना न कर सके। 'लोभनम्' का अर्थ है ललचाना या मोहित करना। इन्द्र उसे 'काम' (वासना) और 'मोह' (विवेक शून्यता) का प्रयोग करने को कहते हैं। यह विश्वामित्र के संयम की अंतिम परीक्षा है—क्या वे सौन्दर्य के समक्ष झुकेंगे, या अपने क्रोध पर काबू रख पाएंगे?
