yat mām lobhayase raṃbhe kāma krodha jaya eṣiṇam | daśa varṣa sahasrāṇι śailī sthāsyasi durbhage ॥१-६४-१२॥

Translation
"O unfortunate one! Since you tried to allure me, who am desiring to conquer lust and anger, you shall remain as a stone for ten thousand years."

"हे दुर्भगे! चूँकि तूने काम और क्रोध को जीतने की इच्छा रखने वाले मुझ (तपस्वी) को लुभाने का प्रयास किया है, इसलिए तू दस हजार वर्षों तक पत्थर (शिला) बनकर रहेगी।"
English Commentary
The irony in Vishvamitra's words is profound. He punishes her for disturbing his quest to conquer anger, yet he uses anger to punish her. He sentences her to become a stone (shaili)—an inanimate object—for ten thousand years. This signifies a regression from sentient consciousness to inertia. Addressing her as durbhage (unfortunate one), he acknowledges her tragic role, yet his wrath permits no mercy at this moment.

शाप देते समय विश्वामित्र स्वयं अपने शब्दों में विरोधाभास प्रकट करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि वे 'काम और क्रोध को जीतने के इच्छुक' हैं, फिर भी वे क्रोध के वशीभूत होकर शाप दे रहे हैं। 'शैली' (शिला/पत्थर) बनने का शाप जड़ता का प्रतीक है—चूँकि उसने अपनी चेतना का दुरुपयोग किया, इसलिए उसे अचेतन अवस्था प्राप्त होगी। 'दुर्भगे' (भाग्यहीन) संबोधन रंभा की उस नियति को दर्शाता है जिससे वह डर रही थी।
