Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्त्वा महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
अशक्नुवन् धारयितुम् कोपम् संतापम् आगतः ॥१-६४-१४॥
evam uktvā mahātejā viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ |
aśaknuvan dhārayitum kopam saṃtāpam āgataḥ ॥1-64-14॥
Translation
Having spoken thus (cursed her), the great sage Vishvamitra of great luster, being unable to restrain his anger, became filled with remorse.
हिंदी अनुवाद
ऐसा कहकर (शाप देकर), महातेजस्वी महामुनि विश्वामित्र, जो अपने क्रोध को धारण करने (रोकने) में असमर्थ रहे थे, अत्यंत पश्चाताप (संताप) को प्राप्त हुए।
English Commentary
This verse marks the immediate realization of failure. Vishvamitra, despite his "great luster" (mahātejā), recognizes that he has lost the battle against his own internal nature. While he successfully repelled the external temptation of lust presented by Rambha, he succumbed to the internal impulse of anger (kopa). The remorse (santapa) here is profound; it is the anguish of a seeker who realizes that in punishing another, he has spiritually impoverished himself. It highlights that true asceticism requires mastery over all reactions, not just desire.

यह श्लोक विश्वामित्र के आत्म-निरीक्षण का क्षण है। रंभा को पत्थर बनाने के तुरंत बाद, उन्हें अपनी हार का अहसास हुआ। यद्यपि उन्होंने 'काम' (वासना) को जीत लिया था, लेकिन वे 'क्रोध' के वेग को रोकने में विफल रहे। 'अशक्नुवन् धारयितुम् कोपम्' (क्रोध को रोकने में असमर्थ)—यह वाक्यांश उनकी तत्कालीन आध्यात्मिक स्थिति की सीमा को दर्शाता है। संताप इसलिए नहीं है कि रंभा को दंड मिला, बल्कि इसलिए है क्योंकि क्रोध करने से उनकी हजारों वर्षों की तपस्या क्षीण हो गई।
