Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्य शापेन महता रम्भा शैली तदा अभवत् ।
वचः श्रुत्वा च कन्दर्पो महर्षेः स च निर्गतः ॥१-६४-१५॥
tasya śāpena mahatā rambhā śailī tadā abhavat |
vacaḥ śrutvā ca kandarpo maharṣeḥ sa ca nirgataḥ ॥1-64-15॥
Translation
Due to his mighty curse, Rambha turned into a stone at that very moment. Hearing the words of the Maharishi, Kandarpa (Cupid) and Indra fled away.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनके महान शाप से रंभा उसी समय पत्थर (शिला) बन गई। महर्षि के शाप-वचन सुनकर कामदेव (कन्दर्प) और इंद्र वहां से भाग गए।
English Commentary
The efficacy of the sage’s speech is instantaneous—Rambha is petrified. The verse juxtaposes the tragedy of the pawn (Rambha) with the escape of the masterminds. Kandarpa and Indra, hearing the terrifying power in the sage's voice, flee the scene immediately. This illustrates the perilous nature of serving the Devas in their political games; when the consequences arrive, the powerful retreat, leaving the subordinate to suffer the fallout.
हिंदी टीका
ऋषि के वचन अमोघ होते हैं; रम्भा तत्काल जड़वत हो गई। यहाँ इंद्र और कामदेव की प्रतिक्रिया कायरतापूर्ण दिखाई गई है। जिस रम्भा को उन्होंने मोहरा बनाया था, उसे विपत्ति में छोड़कर वे स्वयं सुरक्षित स्थान पर भाग गए ('निर्गतः')। यह सत्तालोलुप देवताओं के चरित्र पर व्यंग्य है जो अपने स्वार्थ के लिए दूसरों की बलि देते हैं। विश्वामित्र का तपोबल इतना अधिक था कि देवता उनके सामने ठहरने का साहस नहीं कर सके।
