Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कोपेन स महातेजाः तपो अपहरणे कृते ।
इन्द्रियैर् अजितै राम न लेभे शान्तिम् आत्मनः ॥१-६४-१६॥
kopena sa mahātejāḥ tapo apaharaṇe kṛte |
indriyair ajitai rāma na lebhe śāntim ātmanaḥ ॥1-64-16॥
Translation
O Rama! Because his senses were unconquered, and his penance was snatched away by anger, the great lustrous sage did not find peace of mind.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! इन्द्रियों के विजित न होने (अजितै) के कारण, क्रोध द्वारा तपस्या का अपहरण कर लिए जाने पर, उन महातेजस्वी ऋषि को मन की शांति नहीं मिली।
English Commentary
This is a diagnostic verse. It explains exactly why Vishvamitra failed: his senses were ajitai (unconquered). Despite years of austerity, the emotional reactivity remained. The metaphor of anger "stealing" (apaharane) the penance is powerful; spiritual merit is viewed as wealth that can be lost in a moment of rage. The lack of "shanti" (peace) serves as the internal barometer for the sage—he knows that without inner equanimity, all external power is futile.

शतानन्द जी यहाँ समस्या की जड़ बताते हैं—'इन्द्रियैर् अजितै' (इन्द्रियों का न जीता जाना)। विश्वामित्र ने शारीरिक तप तो किया था, किन्तु मन और इन्द्रियों के सूक्ष्म स्तर पर विजय अभी बाकी थी। क्रोध ने चोर की भांति उनकी तपस्या के संचित धन का 'अपहरण' कर लिया। आध्यात्मिक उन्नति का मापदंड 'शांति' है, और चूंकि विश्वामित्र अशांत थे, उन्हें समझ आ गया कि वे अभी ब्रह्मर्षि पद के योग्य नहीं हैं।
