Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अथ हैमवतीम् राम दिशम् त्यक्त्वा महामुनिः ।
पूर्वाम् दिशम् अनुप्राप्य तपः तेपे सुदारुणम् ॥१-६५-१॥
atha haimavatīm rāma diśam tyaktvā mahāmuniḥ |
pūrvām diśam anuprāpya tapaḥ tepe sudāruṇam ॥1-65-1॥
Translation
Then, O Rama, leaving the direction of the Himalayas (North), the great sage went to the Eastern direction and performed extremely severe penance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! इसके पश्चात महामुनि ने उत्तर दिशा (हिमालय क्षेत्र) को त्याग दिया और पूर्व दिशा में जाकर अत्यंत दारुण (कठोर) तपस्या आरंभ की।
English Commentary
The change in geography signifies a spiritual reset. Leaving the Haimavatim disham (Himalayan/Northern quarter), which was the site of his failure with Rambha, he moves to the Purvam disham (East). The East is associated with the rising sun and new beginnings. The adjective sudarunam (very terrible/severe) suggests that the intensity of this final phase exceeds all previous attempts. He is starting afresh, leaving behind the environment associated with his defeat.

स्थान परिवर्तन एक प्रतीकात्मक अर्थ रखता है। उत्तर दिशा में (कौशिकी नदी के तट पर) उनका पतन हुआ था (क्रोध के कारण)। अब वे 'पूर्व दिशा' (सूर्योदय और ज्ञान की दिशा) की ओर बढ़ते हैं। 'सुदारुणम्' (अत्यंत भीषण) शब्द बताता है कि यह तपस्या पिछले सभी प्रयासों से अधिक कठिन थी। विश्वामित्र अपने अतीत को भौगोलिक रूप से भी पीछे छोड़ रहे हैं ताकि नए सिरे से शुरुआत कर सकें।
