Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ब्रह्मन् नप्रतिजानीमो नास्तिको जायते जनः ।
सम्मूढम् इव त्रैलोक्यम् संप्रक्षुभित मानसम् ॥ ॥१-६५-१५॥
Brahman napratijānīmo nāstiko jāyate janaḥ |
Sammūḍham iva trailokyam saṃprakṣubhita mānasam ॥1-65-15॥
Translation
"O Brahman! We do not know (what represents the right course/remedy); people are becoming atheists (losing faith in order). The three worlds appear stupefied, and minds are thoroughly agitated."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे ब्रह्मन्! हम नहीं जानते कि क्या होगा, (इस उपद्रव से) लोग नास्तिक हो रहे हैं (उन्हें धर्म पर भरोसा नहीं रहा)। तीनों लोक सम्मोहित (जड़वत) और व्याकुल मन वाले हो गए हैं।"
English Commentary
The gods present a sociological argument to Brahma. The chaos caused by Vishvamitra is making mortals lose faith ("Nastiko jayate janah"). If the cosmic order allows such suffering without resolution, or if such great penance goes unrewarded, people will cease to believe in the law of Karma or the divine. The "Three Worlds" are in a stupor ("Sammudham"), unable to function. The gods plead that for the sake of preserving faith and Dharma in the universe, Vishvamitra's status must be ratified immediately.

यह एक बहुत ही गहरा सामाजिक और दार्शनिक अवलोकन है। देवता कहते हैं "नास्तिको जायते जनः"—अर्थात जब प्रलय जैसी स्थिति आती है और देवताओं की शक्ति काम नहीं करती, तो आम जन का विश्वास धर्म और ईश्वर से उठने लगता है। यदि तपस्या का फल नहीं मिला, तो लोग तप और धर्म को व्यर्थ मानेंगे। व्यवस्था बनाए रखने के लिए यह आवश्यक है कि कर्म (तप) का फल मिले। देवताओं की चिंता केवल अपने प्राणों की नहीं, बल्कि 'धर्म' की स्थापना की भी है।
