Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पूर्णे वर्ष सहस्रे तु काष्ठ भूतम् महामुनिम् ।
विघ्नैः बहुभिः आधूतम् क्रोधो न अंतरम् आविशत् ॥१-६५-३॥
pūrṇe varṣa sahasre tu kāṣṭha bhūtam mahāmunim |
vighnaiḥ bahubhiḥ ādhūtam krodho na aṃtaram āviśat ॥1-65-3॥
Translation
When the thousand years were completed, anger could not enter the heart of the great sage, who had become like a piece of wood, though he was shaken by many obstacles.

एक हजार वर्ष पूरे होने पर, काष्ठ (लकड़ी) की भांति जड़ हुए उन महामुनि को अनेक विघ्नों ने झकझोरा, किंतु क्रोध उनके हृदय में प्रवेश नहीं कर सका।
English Commentary
The imagery of being kashtha bhutam (becoming like wood) illustrates total physical immobility and withdrawal of senses (pratyahara). Despite being assaulted by bahubhi vighnaih (many obstacles/temptations), his internal state remains impervious. The crucial victory is stated simply: anger did not enter him. He has finally constructed an impregnable fortress of peace within himself, rendering external provocations useless.

तपस्या की पूर्णता का वर्णन है। विश्वामित्र 'काष्ठ भूतम्' (सूखी लकड़ी के समान) हो गए थे—पूरी तरह अचल और देह-भान से रहित। देवताओं और राक्षसों ने अनेक 'विघ्न' डाले, लेकिन इस बार परिणाम अलग था। 'क्रोधो न अंतरम् आविशत्'—क्रोध उनके भीतर प्रवेश नहीं कर पाया। उन्होंने अंततः उस शत्रु को हरा दिया जिसने उन्हें बार-बार हराया था। यह उनकी सबसे बड़ी विजय थी।
