English Commentary
Word of Sita's beauty and divine origin spread, attracting numerous suitors. Janaka narrates that kings (rajano) and rulers of the earth (prithivikshitam) arrived to formally woo her (varayamasuh). Addressing Vishvamitra as Munipungava (Preeminent Sage), Janaka provides the context of the conflict. It wasn't just a passive waiting game; there was active pursuit by powerful monarchs. This sets up the contrast between the arrogance of the ordinary kings who thought they could claim her by status alone, and the upcoming test which required divine merit.

सीता के रूप और गुणों की कीर्ति सुनकर देश-विदेश के अनेक राजा मिथिला आए। 'वरयामासुः' का अर्थ है 'वरण करने की इच्छा प्रकट की' या 'माँगने आए'। जनक यहाँ विश्वामित्र को 'मुनिपुंगव' (मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ) संबोधित करते हुए पिछली घटनाओं का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। यह श्लोक बताता है कि सीता के स्वयंवर से पहले भी कई राजाओं ने कूटनीतिक या पारंपरिक तरीके से सीता का हाथ माँगने का प्रयास किया था। जनक ने उन सभी को अपनी प्रतिज्ञा सुनाई। यह भीड़ और प्रतिस्पर्धा सीता के अद्वितीय महत्व को दर्शाती है।
