English Commentary
Janaka displays remarkable integrity and spine here. Despite the pressure from powerful monarchs, he refused to hand over Sita (na dadami), strictly adhering to the Virya Shulka vow. He explains that he denied them not out of malice, but because the condition was not met. The reaction of the kings was collective indignation. The phrase sametya (coming together/uniting) implies that individual rivalries were set aside to form a coalition against Janaka. This marks the transition from a marriage proposal to a military conflict, driven by the bruised egos of the rejected suitors.

जनक ने किसी भी राजनीतिक दबाव में आए बिना अपनी प्रतिज्ञा का पालन किया। उन्होंने स्पष्ट कर दिया कि बिना पराक्रम सिद्ध किए, सीता का विवाह असंभव है। 'न ददामि' (मैं नहीं देता हूँ) जनक की दृढ़ता को दर्शाता है। राजाओं का अहं आहत हो गया। वे इसे अपनी योग्यता की कमी मानने के बजाय जनक का अपमान मानने लगे। 'समेत्य' (मिलकर/एक साथ आकर) शब्द बताता है कि अस्वीकृत होने पर राजाओं ने गुटबंदी कर ली। जब अहंकार को चोट लगती है, तो अक्सर शत्रु भी मित्र बन जाते हैं ताकि वे उस व्यक्ति को नष्ट कर सकें जिसने उन्हें चुनौती दी है।
