Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अरुन्धन् मिथिलाम् सर्वे वीर्य संदेहम् आगताः ।
आत्मानम् अवधूतम् ते विज्ञाय मुनिपुंगव ॥ ॥१-६६-२१॥
Arundhan mithilām sarve vīrya sandeham āgatāḥ |
Ātmānam avadhūtam te vijñāya munipuṃgava ॥1-66-21॥
Translation
Considering themselves insulted and their valor questioned (or casting doubt on the validity of the test), they all besieged Mithila.

अपने बल (वीर्य) पर संदेह किए जाने (या मेरे कथन पर अविश्वास करने) के कारण और स्वयं को अपमानित (तिरस्कृत) मानकर, उन सबने मिथिला को घेर लिया (अवरुद्ध कर दिया)।
English Commentary
The rejection escalated into a military siege. Feeling insulted (avadhutam) and believing their martial prowess was being mocked or doubted (virya sandeham), the kings surrounded Mithila (arundhan). They sought to take by force what they could not win by merit. This verse depicts the chaos that ensues when Dharma is abandoned for ego. The collective siege was a massive threat to the peaceful kingdom of Videha, intended to punish Janaka for his "audacity" in setting such a high standard for his daughter.

क्रोधित राजाओं ने सामूहिक रूप से मिथिला पर आक्रमण कर दिया और नगर की घेराबंदी ('अरुन्धन्') कर ली। उन्हें लगा कि जनक ने जानबूझकर एक असंभव शर्त रखी थी ताकि उनका अपमान ('अवधूतम्') किया जा सके। 'वीर्य संदेहम् आगताः' का अर्थ है कि वे जनक द्वारा उनके बल को कम आँकने से क्षुब्ध थे। वे यह सिद्ध करना चाहते थे कि भले ही वे धनुष न उठा सकें, लेकिन युद्ध में वे जनक को हरा सकते हैं। यह कायरों का लक्षण है—परीक्षा में फेल होने पर परीक्षक पर हमला करना।
