रोषेण महता आविष्टाः पीडयन् मिथिलाम् पुरीम् ।
ततः संवत्सरे पूर्णे क्षयम् यातानि सर्वशः ॥ ॥१-६६-२२॥
Roṣeṇa mahatā āviṣṭāḥ pīḍayan mithilām purīm |
Tataḥ samvatsare pūrṇe kṣayam yātāni sarvaśaḥ ॥1-66-22॥
Translation
Possessed by great rage, they tormented the city of Mithila. Then, after a full year had passed, all my resources were exhausted.

महान रोष से भरे हुए उन राजाओं ने मिथिला पुरी को पीड़ित किया। तदनंतर एक वर्ष पूरा होने पर मेरे सब साधन (कोश, अन्न, सेना आदि) क्षीण हो गए।
English Commentary
The siege was brutal and prolonged. Driven by rage, the coalition of kings tormented Mithila for a full year. Janaka candidly admits the toll this took: his defenses and resources (sadhanani) began to deplete (kshayam yatani). This creates a moment of vulnerability for the great king. It shows that even a righteous kingdom can be pushed to the brink by the collective force of adharma. The duration of one year highlights the persistence of the aggressors and the resilience of Mithila before the situation became critical.

घेराबंदी लंबी चली। राजाओं ने 'महता रोषेण' (भारी क्रोध) के साथ मिथिला को कष्ट दिया। जनक स्वीकार करते हैं कि स्थिति गंभीर हो गई थी। एक वर्ष ('संवत्सरे पूर्णे') तक युद्ध और घेराबंदी चलने के कारण राज्य के संसाधन ('साधनानि')—अन्न, धन, और सैन्य शक्ति—समाप्त होने लगे ('क्षयम् यातानि')। जनक जैसे ब्रह्मज्ञानी राजा के लिए भी यह एक कठिन परीक्षा थी। यह श्लोक यथार्थवादी है; भले ही राजा धार्मिक हो, लेकिन भौतिक युद्ध में संसाधनों की कमी एक वास्तविक समस्या होती है।
