साधनानि मुनिश्रेष्ठ ततो अहम् भृश दुःखितः ।
ततो देव गणान् सर्वान् तपसा अहम् प्रसादयम् ॥ ॥१-६६-२३॥
Sādhanāni muniśreṣṭha tato aham bhṛśa duḥkhitaḥ |
Tato deva gaṇān sarvān tapasā aham prasādayam ॥1-66-23॥
Translation
O best of sages, with my resources exhausted, I became deeply grieved. Then, I propitiated all the hosts of gods through penance.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! साधनों के क्षीण होने पर मैं अत्यंत दुखी हुआ। तब मैंने तपस्या के द्वारा सभी देवगणों को प्रसन्न किया।
English Commentary
Facing depleted resources and deep sorrow (bhrisha duhkhitah), Janaka turned to his primary strength: spirituality. He did not surrender politically; he escalated the conflict to the divine plane. He performed penance (tapasa) to propitiate the gods (deva ganan). This marks the turning point. Where ordinary kings rely solely on armies, a Rajarshi relies on the power of Tapas. It demonstrates Janaka's unwavering faith that since he was upholding a vow of truth and purity, the cosmos was obligated to support him.

जब भौतिक साधन समाप्त हो गए, तो जनक ने आध्यात्मिक शक्ति का सहारा लिया। वे 'भृश दुःखितः' (अत्यंत दुखी) थे, अपनी प्रजा के कष्ट को देखकर। लेकिन उन्होंने हार नहीं मानी और न ही सीता को सौंपा। इसके बजाय, उन्होंने 'तपसा' (तपस्या) का मार्ग चुना। यह एक राजर्षि का लक्षण है—संकट काल में दैवीय सहायता का आह्वान करना। उन्होंने देवताओं की आराधना की ताकि वे धर्म की रक्षा के लिए सहायता करें। यह दिखाता है कि धर्मयुद्ध में अंतिम विजय के लिए दैवीय कृपा आवश्यक है।
