Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्तः तु जनकः प्रत्युवाच महामुनिम् ।
श्रूयताम् अस्य धनुषो यत् अर्थम् इह तिष्ठति ॥ ॥१-६६-७॥
Evam uktaḥ tu janakaḥ pratyuvāca mahāmunim |
Śrūyatām asya dhanuṣo yat artham iha tiṣṭhati ॥1-66-7॥
Translation
Addressed thus, Janaka replied to the great sage: "Please listen to the reason (history) regarding why this bow resides here."
हिंदी अनुवाद
ऐसा कहे जाने पर जनक ने महामुनि (विश्वामित्र) को उत्तर दिया—"सुनीये, यह धनुष जिस कारण से (प्रयोजन से) यहाँ रखा हुआ है (उसका इतिहास सुनिए)।"
English Commentary
Before revealing the physical bow, King Janaka prepares the audience by revealing its provenance. He invites the sage and the princes to listen (shruyatam) to the backstory. This implies that the bow is not merely a weapon of war but a sacred trust with a specific purpose (yat artham) for being in his lineage's possession. Janaka understands that to truly "see" a divine object, one must understand its origin and significance. This marks the beginning of the flashback narrative regarding the Shiva Dhanush.

राजा जनक विश्वामित्र के अनुरोध को स्वीकार करते हैं, लेकिन धनुष दिखाने से पहले वे उसकी महत्ता और इतिहास बताना आवश्यक समझते हैं। 'यत् अर्थम् इह तिष्ठति' का भाव है कि यह धनुष कोई साधारण अस्त्र नहीं है जो राजमहल में पड़ा हो; इसके यहाँ होने का एक विशिष्ट दैवीय कारण और इतिहास है। जनक चाहते हैं कि राम और लक्ष्मण इस धनुष के दर्शन से पहले इसकी पवित्रता और इसके पीछे की शिव-शक्ति को समझें। यह एक कथावाचक की शैली है जो श्रोता में वस्तु के प्रति श्रद्धा उत्पन्न करती है।
