मम सत्या प्रतिज्ञा सा वीर्य शुल्का इति कौशिक ।
सीता प्राणैः बहुमता देया रामाय मे सुता ॥ ॥१-६७-२३॥
Mama satyā pratijñā sā vīrya śulkā iti kauśika । Sītā prāṇaiḥ bahumatā deyā rāmāya me sutā ॥ ॥1-67-23॥
Translation
"O Kaushika! My vow that Sita is 'Virya Shulka' (to be won by valor) has come true. My daughter Sita, who is dearer to me than life, shall be given to Rama."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे कौशिक (विश्वामित्र)! मेरी वह प्रतिज्ञा सत्य हो गई कि सीता 'वीर्यशुल्का' (जिसका मूल्य वीरता है) है। मेरे प्राणों से भी अधिक प्रिय मेरी यह पुत्री सीता मैं श्रीराम को दूँगा।"
English Commentary
Janaka reaffirms his vow known as Virya Shulka—where valor is the only "price" or condition for the bride. He addresses Vishvamitra as "Kaushika," confirming that the condition has been met. The emotional weight of the verse lies in the phrase pranaih bahumata (cherished more than life). Sita is not a burden to be offloaded, but a treasure to be bestowed. Janaka emphasizes that he is giving his most beloved possession to Rama, signifying that only Rama’s proven valor made him worthy of such a precious gift.

जनक अपनी प्रतिज्ञा 'वीर्यशुल्का' को पुनः दोहराते हैं। 'शुल्क' का अर्थ है मूल्य या कन्यादान की शर्त। सीता साधारण कन्या नहीं थीं, वे धरती से जन्मी थीं, इसलिए उनका विवाह किसी साधारण रूप-रंग या धन के आधार पर नहीं, बल्कि केवल 'वीर्य' (पराक्रम) के आधार पर हो सकता था। जनक कहते हैं कि सीता उन्हें 'प्राणैः बहुमता' (प्राणों से भी बढ़कर) प्रिय हैं। ऐसी अमूल्य पुत्री को सौंपने के लिए उन्हें श्रीराम जैसा ही सुपात्र चाहिए था। अब वे निश्चिंत होकर कन्यादान (देया रामाय) की घोषणा करते हैं।
