Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इदम् धनुर् वरम् ब्रह्मन् जनकैः अभिपूजितम् ।
राजभिः च महा वीर्यैः अशक्तैः पूरितम् तदा ॥ ॥१-६७-८॥
Idam dhanur varam brahman janakaiḥ abhipūjitam |
Rājabhiḥ ca mahā vīryaiḥ aśaktaiḥ pūritam tadā ॥1-67-8॥
Translation
"O Brahman! This excellent bow has been worshipped by the Janakas (my ancestors). It was also honoured by mighty kings who were unable (to use it)."

"हे ब्राह्मण! यह श्रेष्ठ धनुष मेरे पूर्वजों (जनकों) द्वारा सदा पूजित रहा है। और उन महावीर्यवान राजाओं द्वारा भी (पूजित रहा है) जो इसे (उठाने/प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाने में) असमर्थ रहे।"
English Commentary
Janaka introduces the bow's legacy. It is an heirloom worshipped by his lineage (Janakaih). He honestly admits that even Maha viryaih (kings of great valor) were found ashaktaih (powerless/incapable) before it. This serves a dual purpose: it glorifies the bow and warns the challenger. It implies that physical strength alone is insufficient to master this weapon; it requires something beyond what the greatest kings of the earth possessed.

जनक विश्वामित्र को 'ब्रह्मन्' संबोधित करते हैं। वे बताते हैं कि यह धनुष 'जनकैः' (जनक वंश के पूर्वजों) द्वारा पूजित है। यहाँ 'जनक' शब्द वंश के सभी राजाओं के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ है (जनक एक उपाधि थी)। वे पुनः याद दिलाते हैं कि जो राजा यहाँ आए थे, वे 'महा वीर्यैः' (बड़े पराक्रमी) थे, लेकिन वे भी 'अशक्तैः' (असमर्थ) सिद्ध हुए। यह कहकर जनक राम के सामने चुनौती की गंभीरता को स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं—कि इसे कम न आँका जाए।
