अस्मै देया मया सीता वीर्य शुल्का महात्मने ।
प्रतिज्ञाम् तर्तुम् इच्छामि तत् अनुज्ञातुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥१-६८-१०॥
Asmai deyā mayā sītā vīrya śulkā mahātmane । Pratijñām tartum icchāmi tat anujñātum arhasi ॥ ॥1-68-10॥
Translation
"I intend to give Sita, who was to be won by valor, to this high-souled one. I wish to fulfill my vow; therefore, you ought to give your permission."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"अब मैं 'वीर्यशुल्का' सीता का विवाह इस महात्मा (श्रीराम) के साथ करना चाहता हूँ। मैं अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पूरी करना चाहता हूँ, अतः आप इसकी अनुमति देने की कृपा करें।"
English Commentary
Janaka's message displays impeccable etiquette. Even though Rama has won Sita by fulfilling the condition, Janaka does not presume the marriage is final without the groom's father's consent. He explicitly asks for permission (anujnatum arhasi). He frames the marriage as the fulfillment of his own vow (pratijyam tartum), putting himself in a position of humility rather than authority. By reiterating Virya Shulka, he reminds Dasharatha that Sita is a prize won by right, yet the formal giving (kanyadaan) requires parental blessing from both sides.

राजा जनक की विनम्रता देखिए। यद्यपि सीता का विवाह राम से होना तय हो चुका है क्योंकि शर्त पूरी हो गई है, फिर भी जनक इसे एकतरफा घोषित नहीं करते। वे दशरथ से कहते हैं—'अनुज्ञातुम् अर्हसि' (आप अनुमति देने योग्य हैं)। यह वर पक्ष के पिता का सम्मान है। जनक कहते हैं कि वे अपनी 'प्रतिज्ञा' से मुक्त होना चाहते हैं (तर्तुम् इच्छामि - तैरकर पार करना चाहते हैं)। राम को 'अस्मै' (इस) कहकर वे संकेत करते हैं कि राम ही एकमात्र योग्य वर हैं। यह श्लोक क्षत्रिय मर्यादा और पारिवारिक शिष्टाचार का सुंदर संगम है।
