पूर्वम् प्रतिज्ञा विदिता वीर्य शुल्का मम आत्मजा ।
राजानः च कृत अमर्षा निर्वीर्या विमुखी कृताः ॥ ॥१-६८-७॥
Pūrvam pratijñā viditā vīrya śulkā mama ātmajā । Rājānaḥ ca kṛta amarṣā nirvīryā vimukhī kṛtāḥ ॥ ॥1-68-7॥
Translation
My earlier vow is known to you, that my daughter is to be won by valor. Many kings, becoming indignant, were turned away as they lacked the necessary strength.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेरी यह पूर्व प्रतिज्ञा आपको विदित ही है कि मेरी पुत्री 'वीर्यशुल्का' (पराक्रम ही जिसका मूल्य है) है। (इस प्रयास में) कई राजा क्रोधित हुए, और बलहीन सिद्ध होकर विमुख कर दिए गए।
English Commentary
The message recounts the history of the Swayamvara. Janaka reminds Dasharatha of the strict condition: Virya Shulka. He mentions the resentment (amarsha) of the failed kings who were turned away (vimukhi kritah) because they were nirvirya (lacking strength). This context is vital. By highlighting the failure and frustration of other monarchs, Janaka is setting the stage to contrast them with Rama's success, thereby elevating the magnitude of the feat.

जनक दूतों के माध्यम से अपनी प्रतिज्ञा की कठिनाई का स्मरण करा रहे हैं। 'कृत अमर्षा' (जिन्होंने क्रोध किया) उन राजाओं के लिए कहा गया है जो धनुष न उठा पाने पर झगड़ने लगे थे। 'निर्वीर्या' (वीर्यहीन) शब्द का प्रयोग यह बताने के लिए किया गया है कि दुनिया के बड़े-बड़े योद्धा फेल हो गए थे। यह पृष्ठभूमि इसलिए बांधी जा रही है ताकि दशरथ को एहसास हो सके कि उनके पुत्र ने कितना असंभव कार्य किया है। यह राम की उपलब्धि की महिमा को बढ़ाने वाला कथन है।
