Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
श्रुत्वा विदेह अधिपतिः परम् विस्मयम् आगतः ।
ततः सर्वे मुनि गणाः परस्पर समागमे ॥ ॥१-६९-१६॥
Śrutvā Videha adhipatiḥ param vismayam āgataḥ । Tataḥ sarve muni gaṇāḥ paraspara samāgame ॥ ॥1-69-16॥
Translation
Hearing this, the Lord of Videha (Janaka) was filled with great amazement. Then, all the groups of sages met with one another.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(दशरथ की ऐसी विनम्र बातें) सुनकर विदेहराज जनक को परम विस्मय (आश्चर्य) हुआ। तदनन्तर सभी मुनिगण आपस में एक-दूसरे से मिले।
English Commentary
Janaka is struck with param vismayam (great amazement). He likely expected the Emperor of Ayodhya to be assertive or demanding, but instead found humility and grace. This pleasant shock sets a positive tone for the events to follow. The second line describes the mingling of the sages (muni gaṇāḥ). The spiritual advisors of both kingdoms, who are usually absorbed in austerity, come together in joyful communion, symbolizing the spiritual harmony that underpins the political alliance between the Ikshvakus and the Videhas.
