Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रामस्य लोक रामस्य क्रियाम् वैवाहिकीम् प्रभो ।
तथा इति उक्त्वा तु जनकम् वशिष्टः भगवान् ऋषिः ॥ ॥१-७३-१९॥
Rāmasya loka rāmasya kriyām vaivāhikīm prabho |
Tathā iti uktvā tu janakam vasiṣṭhaḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ॥1-73-19॥
Translation
O Lord! Please initiate the wedding rituals for Rama, who delights the world. Upon hearing this request from King Janaka, the divine sage Vashistha replied, "So be it," and agreed to commence the rites.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे प्रभो! लोक-मनोहर राम के विवाह की क्रिया (आरम्भ) कीजिए," जनक के ऐसा कहने पर भगवान् ऋषि वशिष्ठ ने "तथास्तु" (बहुत अच्छा, ऐसा ही होगा) कहकर उनकी बात मान ली।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the profound etiquette and protocol observed between King Janaka and the royal preceptor, Sage Vashistha. Despite being a great king and the father of the bride, Janaka requests Vashistha to lead the ceremony, acknowledging the sage's spiritual authority. By referring to Rama as "Loka Ramasya" (he who delights the entire world), Janaka acknowledges Rama's universal appeal and divinity. Vashistha’s consent ("Tatha") marks the formal beginning of the Vedic wedding rites. This interaction underscores that in ancient Vedic culture, marriage was not merely a social contract but a high spiritual sacrament (Samskara) requiring the guidance of realized sages to ensure the union aligns with Dharma. It sets a tone of solemnity and reverence for the rituals that follow.

यहाँ राजा जनक और कुलगुरु वशिष्ठ के बीच का संवाद अत्यंत मर्यादापूर्ण है। राजा जनक यद्यपि कन्यादाता हैं और एक महान राजा हैं, फिर भी वे रघुकुल के गुरु वशिष्ठ जी से अनुमति और नेतृत्व का आग्रह करते हैं। 'लोक रामस्य' शब्द का प्रयोग कर जनक जी यह दर्शाते हैं कि राम केवल दशरथ के पुत्र नहीं, बल्कि समस्त लोकों को आनंद देने वाले हैं। वशिष्ठ जी का 'तथा' (वैसा ही हो) कहना वैदिक परंपरा के पालन का संकेत है, जहाँ विवाह संस्कार ऋषि-मुनियों के निर्देशन में ही संपन्न होते थे। यह श्लोक यह भी स्थापित करता है कि विवाह एक सामाजिक उत्सव होने के साथ-साथ एक गंभीर आध्यात्मिक अनुष्ठान है, जिसे विधि-विधान से ही शुरू किया जाना चाहिए। जनक जी की विनम्रता और वशिष्ठ जी की स्वीकृति के साथ विवाह का मुख्य अनुष्ठान आरंभ होता है।
