Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अग्निम् आधाय तम् वेद्याम् विधि मंत्र पूर्वकम् ।
जुहाव अग्नौ महातेजा वशिष्ठो मुनिपुंगव ॥ ॥१-७३-२४॥
Agnim ādhāya tam vedyām vidhi mantra pūrvakam |
Juhāva agnau mahātejā vasiṣṭho munipungava ॥1-73-24॥
Translation
The most excellent among sages, the radiant Vashistha, having placed the fire on that altar with prescribed rites and Mantras, poured oblations into the sacred fire.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुनियों में श्रेष्ठ, महातेजस्वी वशिष्ठ जी ने विधि और मंत्रों के साथ उस वेदी पर अग्नि की स्थापना की और उस अग्नि में आहुति दी (हवन किया)।
English Commentary
This verse marks the ignition of the sacred fire, the pivotal witness (Sakshi) in a Hindu marriage. Vashistha, described here as "Mahateja" (possessing great spiritual radiance) and "Munipungava" (best among sages), establishes the fire using Vedic mantras. The act of "Juhava" (pouring oblations) initiates the Havan. In Vedic thought, Agni is the messenger between humans and the Divine; offerings made into the fire are carried to the various deities to seek their blessings for the couple. The solemnity of this moment is high—the physical fire is lit, matching the spiritual fire of the sage, creating a bridge between the earthly ceremony and the celestial observers. The marriage is now officially proceeding under the gaze of the Fire God.

अब मुख्य विवाह संस्कार प्रारंभ होता है। हिंदू विवाह में अग्नि ही प्रधान साक्षी (साक्षी) मानी जाती है। वशिष्ठ जी ने सबसे पहले वेदी पर अग्नि प्रज्वलित की। 'अग्निम् आधाय' का अर्थ है अग्नि का आधान करना, उसे जागृत करना। वशिष्ठ जी के लिए 'महातेजा' (महान तेज वाले) विशेषण का प्रयोग किया गया है, जो बताता है कि उनकी अपनी आध्यात्मिक शक्ति अग्नि के समान ही प्रखर थी। अग्नि में आहुति (जुहाव) देकर उन्होंने देवताओं को आमंत्रित किया। अग्नि को देवताओं का मुख माना जाता है; इसके माध्यम से दी गई आहुति सीधे देवताओं तक पहुँचती है। इस श्लोक से यह स्पष्ट होता है कि राम और सीता का विवाह एक निजी मामला नहीं, बल्कि एक ब्रह्मांडीय घटना थी, जिसकी साक्षी साक्षात अग्निदेव बने।
