अब्रवीत् जनको राजा कौसल्य आनंद वर्धनम् ।
इयम् सीता मम सुता सह धर्म चरी तव ॥ ॥१-७३-२६॥
Abravīt janako rājā kausalya ānanda vardhanam |
Iyam sītā mama sutā saha dharma carī tava ॥1-73-26॥
Translation
(Then) King Janaka spoke to Rama, who increases the joy of Kausalya: "This is Sita, my daughter; she is your partner in Dharma (righteous duties)."

(तब) राजा जनक ने कौशल्या का आनंद बढ़ाने वाले राम से कहा— "यह मेरी पुत्री सीता है, जो (अब से) तुम्हारी सहधर्मचारिणी (धर्म के कार्य में साथ चलने वाली) है।"
English Commentary
This is arguably one of the most quoted verses in the Ramayana. Janaka addresses Rama affectionately as the "increaser of Kausalya's joy," reminding him of his duty to his family. He then introduces Sita with the profound title "Sahadharmachari" (Partner in Dharma). He does not use words implying merely a wife or a subordinate. In Vedic culture, a man cannot perform full religious rites (Yajnas) without his wife; she completes his spiritual identity. By calling her this, Janaka entrusts Rama with a partner who will share not just his home, but his destiny, his duties, and his spiritual merit. It foreshadows Sita's unwavering resolve to accompany Rama to the forest, as sharing his hardships is part of being his Sahadharmachari.

यह रामायण का सबसे प्रसिद्ध और भावुक श्लोक है। जनक जी राम को 'कौशल्या आनंद वर्धनम्' कहते हैं, जो राम के मातृ-प्रेम और सौम्य स्वभाव को इंगित करता है। फिर वे ऐतिहासिक वाक्य कहते हैं: 'इयम् सीता मम सुता' (यह मेरी बेटी सीता है)। और फिर उसके भविष्य का निर्धारण करते हैं—'सहधर्मचारिणी तव'। जनक ने यह नहीं कहा कि यह तुम्हारी 'पत्नी' या 'दासी' है, उन्होंने 'सहधर्मचारिणी' कहा। इसका अर्थ है कि राम जो भी धर्म, यज्ञ या कर्तव्य करेंगे, सीता उसमें बराबर की भागीदार होंगी। हिंदू विवाह में पत्नी का दर्जा 'अर्धांगिनी' का है, जो धर्म के मार्ग पर पति के साथ चलती है। यह शब्द सीता के वनवास जाने के निर्णय का भी आधार बनता है, क्योंकि वनवास राम का धर्म था, तो सीता का साथ जाना उनका 'सह-धर्म' था।
