Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इति उक्त्वा प्राक्षिपत् राजा मंत्र पूतम् जलम् तदा ।
साधु साधु इति देवानाम् ऋषीणाम् वदताम् तदा ॥ ॥१-७३-२८॥
Iti uktvā prākṣipat rājā mantra pūtam jalam tadā |
Sādhu sādhu iti devānām ṛṣīṇām vadatām tadā ॥1-73-28॥
Translation
Saying this, the King poured water sanctified by Mantras (into Rama's hand). At that moment, the gods and sages exclaimed "Sadhu! Sadhu!" (Excellent! Well done!).

एसा कहकर राजा जनक ने मंत्रों से पवित्र किया हुआ जल (राम के हाथ पर) छोड़ दिया। उस समय देवता और ऋषि 'साधु! साधु!' (बहुत सुंदर, बहुत उत्तम) ऐसा कहने लगे।
English Commentary
The act of pouring water ("Prakshipat jalam") signifies the irrevocable completion of the gift (Kanyadaan). In Vedic rituals, a vow or gift is finalized by releasing water over the recipient's hand. As Janaka completes this momentous act, a chorus of "Sadhu! Sadhu!" (Excellent! Bravo!) erupts from the assembled sages and the watching celestials. This universal applause indicates that the union aligns with cosmic order (Rta). The gods are rejoicing not just for a wedding, but because this union is pivotal for the destruction of evil forces (Ravana) later in the epic. The validation by the Rishis confirms that the ritual was conducted with perfect adherence to Dharma.

संकल्प को पूरा करने के लिए जल का प्रयोग भारतीय परंपरा में अनिवार्य है। राजा जनक ने वचन कहने के बाद 'मंत्र पूतम् जलम्' (मंत्रों से पवित्र जल) राम के हाथों में छोड़कर कन्यादान पूर्ण किया। इसे 'जल-संकल्प' कहते हैं। जैसे ही यह महान दान संपन्न हुआ, आकाश और पृथ्वी दोनों ओर से जयकार उठी। 'साधु-साधु' का उद्घोष ऋषियों और देवताओं द्वारा किया गया अनुमोदन है। यह दर्शाता है कि यह विवाह केवल दो परिवारों की सहमति नहीं थी, बल्कि इसे दैवीय स्वीकृति भी प्राप्त थी। देवताओं का प्रसन्न होना इस बात का संकेत है कि रावण-वध और धर्म-स्थापना का जो कार्य राम को करना है, उसकी नींव इस विवाह के साथ पड़ गई है।
