Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्वस्रीयम् मम राजेन्द्र द्रष्टु कामो महीपतिः ।
तत् अर्थम् उपयातो अहम् अयोध्याम् रघुनंदन ॥ ॥१-७३-४॥
Svasrīyam mama rājendra draṣṭu kāmo mahīpatiḥ । Tat artham upayāto aham Ayodhyām Raghunandana ॥ ॥1-73-4॥
Translation
"O King of Kings! O Scion of Raghu! The Lord of the Earth (my father) wishes to see my sister's son (Bharata). For that purpose, I had gone to Ayodhya."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे राजेन्द्र! हे रघुनंदन! महीपति (मेरे पिता) मेरे भांजे (भरत) को देखना चाहते हैं। इसी उद्देश्य से मैं (पहले) अयोध्या गया था।"
English Commentary
Yudhajit explains his mission: his father longs to see his grandson, Bharata (svasrīyam - sister's son). Addressing Dasharatha respectfully as Rajendra and Raghunandana, he reveals that he traveled all the way to Ayodhya first. This clarifies that his arrival in Mithila was a detour; he went to the capital expecting to find the prince there, only to find it empty of the royal family.

युधाजित अपने आने का प्रयोजन बताते हैं। उनके पिता, जो अब वृद्ध हो चले हैं, अपने नाती (स्वस्रीयम् - बहन के बेटे) भरत को देखना चाहते हैं। इसलिए युधाजित भरत को ले जाने के लिए अयोध्या गए थे। उन्हें यह नहीं पता था कि दशरथ और भरत मिथिला में हैं। यह श्लोक बताता है कि प्राचीन काल में संचार की कमी के कारण ऐसी स्थितियाँ बनती थीं, जहाँ अतिथि को मेज़बान के स्थान का पता लगाने के लिए यात्रा करनी पड़ती थी।
