Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
भस्मना च आवृतम् सर्वम् सम्मूढम् इव तत् बलम् ।
वसिष्ठ ऋषयः च अन्ये राजा च ससुतः तदा ॥ ॥१-७४-१५॥
Bhasmanā ca āvṛtam sarvam sammūḍham iva tat balam |
Vasiṣṭha ṛṣayaḥ ca anye rājā ca sasutaḥ tadā ॥1-74-15॥
Translation
At that moment, the entire army, covered in ash and dust, appeared to be stupefied and unconscious. Only Sage Vasistha, the other rishis, King Dasharatha, and his sons retained their consciousness.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय (वहाँ उठने वाले अंधड़ की धूल और) भस्म से ढकी हुई वह सारी सेना अचेत सी हो गई। केवल वसिष्ठ आदि ऋषि, राजा दशरथ और उनके पुत्र ही होश (चेतना) में रहे।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates the overwhelming atmosphere of dread preceding Parashurama's appearance. The phrase "covered in ash" suggests a blinding storm or a suspension of normal reality, symbolizing destruction. There is a stark contrast drawn here: the vast army, representing mere physical might, is rendered insensible by the sheer aura of the approaching power. However, the spiritual leaders (Vasistha) and the divine royalty (Dasharatha and his sons) remain conscious. This highlights that in the face of divine or supernatural phenomena, spiritual fortitude and inner strength supersede ordinary martial power.
