Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्कन्धे च आसज्य परशुम् धनुः विद्युत् गण उपमम् ।
प्रगृह्य शरम् उग्रम् च त्रि पुर घ्नम् यथा शिवम् ॥ ॥१-७४-१९॥
Skandhe ca āsajya paraśum dhanuḥ vidyut gaṇa upamam |
Pragṛhya śaram ugram ca tri pura ghnam yathā śivam ॥1-74-19॥
Translation
He carried his axe upon his shoulder, and held a bow that flashed like a cluster of lightning bolts, along with a fierce arrow. He appeared like Lord Shiva at the time of destroying the demon Tripura.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे अपने कंधे पर फरसा (परशु) लटकाए हुए थे, हाथ में बिजलियाँ के समूह के समान चमकने वाला धनुष और एक उग्र बाण धारण किए हुए थे। वे त्रिपुर का नाश करने वाले भगवान शिव के समान प्रतीत हो रहे थे।
English Commentary
This verse describes Parashurama's iconography. His signature weapon, the axe (parashu), rests on his shoulder. He holds a bow compared to a cluster of lightning bolts, suggesting its celestial origin and devastating power. The most significant metaphor compares him to Lord Shiva in his role as Tripurantaka (the destroyer of the three cities). This comparison elevates Parashurama's stature to that of the Supreme Deity in his most destructive aspect, aptly reflecting the terror he inspires and hinting at his lineage as a devotee/disciple of Shiva.

इस श्लोक में परशुराम के आयुधों (हथियारों) का वर्णन है। उनका मुख्य पहचान-चिह्न 'परशु' (फरसा) उनके कंधे पर है। उनके हाथ में जो धनुष है, उसकी तुलना 'विद्युत गण' (बिजलियों के समूह) से की गई है, जो उसकी दिव्यता और शक्ति को दर्शाता है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण उपमा अंत में है—उनकी तुलना 'त्रिपुरघ्न शिव' से की गई है। जिस प्रकार शिव ने त्रिपुरासुर का संहार करने के लिए रौद्र रूप धारण किया था, वैसा ही रौद्र रूप परशुराम का है। यह उपमा इसलिए भी सटीक है क्योंकि परशुराम शिव के ही शिष्य माने जाते हैं।
