तम् दृष्ट्वा भीम संकाशम् ज्वलंतम् इव पावकम् ।
वसिष्ठ प्रमुखा विप्रा जप होम परायणाः ॥ ॥१-७४-२०॥
Tam dṛṣṭvā bhīma saṃkāśam jvalantam iva pāvakam |
Vasiṣṭha pramukhā viprā japa homa parāyaṇāḥ ॥1-74-20॥
Translation
Seeing him, who looked terrifying and blazed like fire, Vasistha and the other prominent Brahmins, who were engaged in prayers and sacrificial rituals, gathered together.

प्रज्वलित अग्नि के समान और भयंकर प्रतीत होने वाले उन (परशुराम) को देखकर, जप और होम में संलग्न वसिष्ठ आदि प्रमुख ब्राह्मण (एकत्रित हो गए)।
English Commentary
Despite Parashurama's terrifying appearance, the reaction of Vasistha and the other sages is one of alert recognition rather than panic. Being Brahmins themselves engaged in sacred rites (japa homa), they recognize Parashurama not just as a warrior, but as a fellow Brahmin of immense power. They gather to address him, understanding that diplomatic protocol and spiritual kinship are the best tools to handle a volatile situation involving a sage of such magnitude. This sets the stage for a respectful, albeit tense, interaction.

यद्यपि परशुराम का रूप भयभीत करने वाला है, परन्तु वसिष्ठ और अन्य ऋषि भी ब्राह्मण हैं और वे परशुराम की वास्तविकता जानते हैं। वे जानते हैं कि परशुराम भी जन्म से ब्राह्मण हैं। इसलिए, भय के वातावरण के बीच भी, ये ऋषि अपने कर्तव्य (जप-होम) से विचलित नहीं हुए, बल्कि स्थिति को संभालने के लिए आगे आए। यहाँ 'विप्रा' शब्द का प्रयोग महत्वपूर्ण है, जो उनकी विद्वता और सामाजिक स्थिति को दर्शाता है। वे जानते हैं कि एक क्रुद्ध ब्राह्मण को केवल अन्य ज्ञानी ब्राह्मण ही शांत कर सकते हैं या उचित सम्मान दे सकते हैं।
