अथ राजा विदेहानाम् ददौ कन्या धनम् बहु ।
गवाम् शत सहस्राणि बहूनि मिथिलेश्वरः ॥ ॥१-७४-३॥
Atha rājā videhānām dadau kanyā dhanam bahu |
Gavām śata sahasrāṇi bahūni mithileśvaraḥ ॥1-74-3॥
Translation
Then, the King of Videha (Janaka) gave immense wealth as "Kanya-Dhanam" (bridal gifts). The Lord of Mithila gifted hundreds of thousands of cows.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर विदेहराज (जनक) ने 'कन्या-धन' (दहेज) के रूप में बहुत सा धन दिया। मिथिला नरेश ने लाखों की संख्या में बहुत सी गायें दीं।
English Commentary
In ancient Vedic culture, cows were the primary standard of wealth. King Janaka offers "Kanya-Dhanam" (wealth for the maiden), which serves as the bride's personal property (Stridhan). Giving "hundreds of thousands" of cows highlights both the prosperity of Mithila and Janaka’s immense generosity. This act is an expression of paternal love, ensuring his daughters carry the support and blessings of their paternal home into their new lives. It sets the scale for a royal alliance between two great kingdoms.

प्राचीन भारत में 'गोधन' (गायें) ही सबसे बड़ी संपत्ति मानी जाती थीं। जनक जी यहाँ अपनी पुत्रियों को विदा करते समय 'कन्या-धन' दे रहे हैं। इसे आधुनिक 'दहेज' के रूप में नहीं, बल्कि पिता द्वारा पुत्री को दिए गए 'स्त्रीधन' के रूप में देखा जाना चाहिए, जो उसके नए जीवन के लिए उपहार है। 'शत सहस्राणि' (लाखों) गायें देना जनक की उदारता और मिथिला की समृद्धि को दर्शाता है। एक राजा के रूप में वे सुनिश्चित करना चाहते हैं कि उनकी पुत्रियों को अयोध्या में किसी भी प्रकार के ऐश्वर्य की कमी न हो।
