Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
समान सारम् काकुत्स्थ रौद्रेण धनुषा तु इदम् ।
तदा तु देवताः सर्वाः पृच्छन्ति स्म पितामहम् ॥ ॥१-७५-१४॥
samāna sāram kākutstha raudreṇa dhanuṣā tu idam । tadā tu devatāḥ sarvāḥ pṛcchanti sma pitāmaham ॥ ॥1-75-14॥
Translation
O Kakutstha, this bow is equal in essence and power to that Raudra (Shiva's) bow. Once, all the gods asked Grandfather Brahma (about the strength of the two).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे काकुत्स्थ! यह धनुष शक्ति (सार) में उस रौद्र (शिव) धनुष के समान ही है। (एक बार) सभी देवताओं ने पितामह ब्रह्मा से पूछा था (कि इन दोनों में श्रेष्ठ कौन है)।
English Commentary
To ensure Rama understands the gravity of the test, Parashurama asserts that this bow is 'samana saram' (equal in essence/strength) to the one Rama already broke. This eliminates any excuse that the second bow might be inferior or different in quality. He then begins a flashback narrative involving the gods and Brahma to settle a debate about the superiority of the weapons. This mythological precedent serves to frame the current confrontation between Parashurama and Rama as a reenactment or resolution of that ancient cosmic question.

परशुराम यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि यह वैष्णव धनुष शक्ति में शिव धनुष से रत्ती भर भी कम नहीं है ('समान सारम्')। वे एक पुरानी कथा का संदर्भ देते हैं जब देवताओं के मन में जिज्ञासा हुई थी कि शिव और विष्णु के धनुषों में से कौन अधिक शक्तिशाली है। वे इसके लिए ब्रह्मा जी के पास गए। यह श्लोक उस आगामी कथा की भूमिका है जिसमें शिव और विष्णु के बीच हुए युद्ध का वर्णन किया जाएगा। परशुराम यह सिद्ध करना चाहते हैं कि राम की परीक्षा अभी अधूरी है।
