योजयस्व धनुः श्रेष्ठे शरम् पर पुरम् जयम् ।
यदि शक्तः असि काकुत्स्थ द्वन्द्वम् दास्यामि ते ततः ॥१-७५-२८॥
Yojayasva dhanuḥ śreṣṭhe śaram para puram jayam |
Yadi śaktaḥ asi kākutstha dvandvam dāsyāmi te tataḥ ॥1-75-28॥
Translation
Fix this arrow, capable of conquering enemy cities, upon this supreme bow. O Kakutstha! If you are capable of this, I shall then offer you a duel.
हिंदी अनुवाद
शत्रु नगरों को जीतने वाले इस बाण को इस श्रेष्ठ धनुष पर चढ़ाओ। हे काकुत्स्थ! यदि तुम इसमें समर्थ हुए, तो मैं तुम्हें युद्ध (द्वंद्व) का अवसर दूंगा।
English Commentary
Parashurama sets a condition: the duel will only happen if Sri Rama can first string this bow. The arrow is described as para puram jayam (conqueror of enemy cities), emphasizing its destructive power. Addressing Rama as 'Kakutstha' (descendant of Kakutstha, a renowned ancestor), Parashurama tests whether Rama possesses the glory associated with his lineage. This serves as the second great test for Sri Rama, following the breaking of the Shiva Dhanush at Janakpuri.

परशुराम जी शर्त रखते हैं कि युद्ध तो बाद की बात है, पहले श्री राम इस धनुष की प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाकर दिखाएं। 'पर पुरम् जयम्' विशेषण बाण के लिए है, जिसका अर्थ है 'शत्रु के नगरों को जीतने वाला'। परशुराम जी श्री राम को 'काकुत्स्थ' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो इक्ष्वाकु वंश के एक महान पूर्वज का नाम है, यह परखने के लिए कि क्या राम उस महान वंश के तेज को धारण करते हैं। यह शिव धनुष भंग करने के बाद श्री राम के लिए दूसरी बड़ी परीक्षा है।
