Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ब्राह्मणो असि इति पूज्यो मे विश्वामित्र कृतेन च ।
तस्मात् शक्तो न ते राम मोक्तुम् प्राण हरम् शरम् ॥१-७६-६॥
Brāhmaṇo asi iti pūjyo me viśvāmitra kṛtena ca |
Tasmāt śakto na te rāma moktum prāṇa haram śaram ॥1-76-6॥
Translation
"You are a Brahmin and thus worthy of my worship; furthermore, you are related to Vishvamitra. Therefore, O Rama (Parashurama), I cannot release this life-taking arrow at you."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे राम (परशुराम)! आप ब्राह्मण हैं, इसलिए मेरे लिए पूज्य हैं। साथ ही विश्वामित्र जी के (संबंध के) कारण भी आप पूज्य हैं। इसीलिए मैं आप पर यह प्राणहारी बाण छोड़ने में समर्थ नहीं हूँ (अर्थात मैं आपके प्राण नहीं लूँगा)।"
English Commentary
Even with the arrow drawn, Sri Rama adheres strictly to Dharma. Although Parashurama acted as a warrior, he is a Brahmin by birth, and scriptures forbid killing a Brahmin. Additionally, Rama references Vishvamitra (viśvāmitra kṛtena ca), as Parashurama is related to Rama’s guru (Vishvamitra’s sister's grandson). Killing a relative of his Guru would be sinful. Thus, Rama refuses to take Parashurama’s life, demonstrating his status as Maryada Purushottam (the upholder of righteousness).

बाण तानने के बाद भी श्री राम धर्म का उल्लंघन नहीं करते। यद्यपि परशुराम एक योद्धा की भांति लड़े, पर जाति से वे ब्राह्मण हैं। शास्त्र कहता है कि ब्राह्मण अवध्य है। इसके अलावा, 'विश्वामित्र कृतेन च' का अर्थ है कि परशुराम विश्वामित्र की बहन के पौत्र (रिश्तेदार) लगते हैं। गुरु विश्वामित्र के साथ संबंध होने के कारण भी राम उनका वध नहीं कर सकते। यह राम की करुणा और मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम होने का प्रमाण है।
