Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रामस्य वचनम् श्रुत्वा राजा दशरथः सुतम् ।
बाहुभ्याम् सम्परिष्वज्य मूर्ध्नि उपाघ्राय राघवम् ॥१-७७-४॥
rāmasya vacanam śrutvā rājā daśarathaḥ sutam |
bāhubhyām sampariṣvajya mūrdhni upāghrāya rāghavam ॥1-77-4॥
Translation
Hearing Rama's words, King Dasharatha embraced his son with his arms and smelled (kissed) the crown of Raghava's head.

राम के वचन सुनकर राजा दशरथ ने अपने पुत्र राघव को भुजाओं में भरकर गले लगा लिया और उनके मस्तक को सूंघा।
English Commentary
Dasharatha’s reaction is visceral. The gesture of "smelling the head" ("murdhni upaghraya") is a traditional Indian expression of deep parental affection and blessing, often performed after a child returns from danger or achieves success. It symbolizes the King inhaling the essence of his son, reaffirming his life and safety after the terrifying ordeal.

'मूर्ध्नि उपाघ्राय' (मस्तक सूंघना) प्राचीन भारतीय संस्कृति में वात्सल्य प्रकट करने और आशीर्वाद देने का एक वैदिक तरीका है। यह चुंबन से अधिक पवित्र और गहरा माना जाता है। दशरथ का यह आलिंगन केवल प्रेम नहीं, बल्कि मृत्यु के मुख से वापस आए पुत्र के प्रति अपार राहत की अभिव्यक्ति है।
