Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तस्य च एवम् प्रभावस्य धर्मज्ञस्य महात्मनः ।
सुतार्थम् तप्य मानस्य न आसीत् वंशकरः सुतः ॥१-८-१॥
tasya ca evam prabhāvasya dharmajñasya mahātmanaḥ |
sutārtham tapya mānasya na āsīt vaṃśakaraḥ sutaḥ ॥1-8-1॥
Translation
And of him, who possessed such great glory and might, who was a knower of righteousness, and a great soul, and who was grieving (or engaged in religious effort) for the sake of a son—there was not a son who could carry on his lineage.

और जिसकी ऐसी महानता और शक्ति थी, और जो धर्म का ज्ञाता और एक महान आत्मा था, और जो एक पुत्र की खातिर तपस्या कर रहा था - उसके लिए कोई ऐसा पुत्र नहीं था जो उसका वंश चलाने वाला हो।
English Commentary
This verse sets the stage for the crucial events that follow (the performance of the Ashwamedha and Putrakameshti yajnas). It immediately highlights the great paradox in Dasharatha's life. The verse begins by reiterating Dasharatha's supreme qualities, emphasizing the irony of his situation. Despite possessing all the external markers of success and personal virtue, he suffers from a profound personal void: the absence of an heir. In the traditional Hindu context, the absence of a son (especially the eldest male heir) was considered a severe misfortune. This verse serves as a crucial narrative pivot, creating the tension necessary to launch the main plot of the Bala Kanda, which is the birth of the four princes, including Rama.
