सरय्वाः च उत्तरे तीरे यज्ञ भूमिर् विधीयताम् ।
सर्वथा प्राप्स्यसे पुत्रान् अभिप्रेतान् च पार्थिव ॥१-८-१२॥
sarayvāḥ ca uttare tīre yajña bhūmir vidhīyatām |
sarvathā prāpsyase putrān abhipretān ca pārthiva ॥1-8-12॥
Translation
And let the ground for the sacrifice be prepared on the northern bank of the Sarayu River. O King (pārthiva)! You will surely obtain the sons that are desired.

और सरयू नदी के उत्तरी तट पर यज्ञ की भूमि तैयार की जाए। हे राजन! आप निश्चित रूप से अपने इच्छित पुत्रों को प्राप्त करेंगे।
English Commentary
This shloka, from Sarga 8 of the Balakanda, continues the instructions given to Maharaja Dasharatha by his preceptor, Maharishi Vasishtha, and the other Brahmins regarding the preparations for the Ashwamedha sacrifice. After instructing the collection of materials and the release of the horse, they now specify the location for the ritual. 'Sarayvāḥ ca uttare tīre' instructs that the sacrificial ground must be prepared on the northern bank of the sacred Sarayu River, the lifeline of Ayodhya. Performing a sacrifice near a river is considered auspicious, and the northern bank holds special sanctity. This locational instruction ensures the sanctity and grandeur of the yajna. At the conclusion of their direction, the preceptors bestow a crucial assurance upon the King: 'sarvathā prāpsyase putrān abhipretān ca pārthiva' (O King! You will surely obtain the desired sons). This firm promise dispels any lingering doubts in Dasharatha's mind and confirms that his sacrifice, performed according to the scriptures, will certainly be successful, granting him the desired successors, who were eventually born as Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna.

यह श्लोक भी बालकाण्ड, सर्ग ८ का है और गुरु महर्षि वशिष्ठ तथा अन्य ब्राह्मणों के द्वारा महाराज दशरथ को यज्ञ की तैयारी के लिए दिए गए निर्देशों का हिस्सा है। पिछले श्लोक में सामग्री एकत्र करने और अश्व को छोड़ने का आदेश देने के बाद, यहाँ यज्ञ-स्थल के चुनाव पर निर्देश दिया जा रहा है। 'सरय्वाः च उत्तरे तीरे' का अर्थ है कि यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान अयोध्या की जीवन-रेखा, पवित्र सरयू नदी के उत्तरी तट पर होना चाहिए। नदी के किनारे यज्ञ करना शुभ माना जाता है, और उत्तरी तट विशेष रूप से पवित्र होता है। यह स्थान निर्देश यज्ञ की पवित्रता और महत्ता को सुनिश्चित करता है। निर्देश के अंत में, गुरुजनों ने राजा को एक अत्यन्त महत्वपूर्ण आश्वासन दिया है: 'सर्वथा प्राप्स्यसे पुत्रान् अभिप्रेतान् च पार्थिव' (हे राजन! आप निश्चित रूप से इच्छित पुत्रों को प्राप्त करेंगे)। यह आश्वासन दशरथ के मन में उत्पन्न किसी भी संशय को दूर करता है और उन्हें यह विश्वास दिलाता है कि शास्त्र-सम्मत विधि से किया गया उनका यह यज्ञ अवश्य ही सफल होगा, और उन्हें वांछित उत्तराधिकारी प्राप्त होंगे, जो आगे चलकर राम, लक्ष्मण, भरत और शत्रुघ्न के रूप में प्रकट हुए।
