Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यस्य ते धर्मिकी बुद्धिः इयम् पुत्रार्थम् आगता ।
ततः तुष्टोऽभवत् राजा श्रुत्वा तद् द्विज भाषितम् ॥१-८-१३॥
yasya te dharmikī buddhiḥ iyam putrārtham āgatā |
tataḥ tuṣṭo'bhavat rājā śrutvā tad dvija bhāṣitam ॥1-8-13॥
Translation
(The Brahmins said:) 'Because this intention of yours for the purpose of a son is righteous (dharma-aligned, thus it will be fulfilled).' The King (Dasharatha), upon hearing that statement of the Brahmins, became satisfied.

(ब्राह्मणों ने कहा:) 'क्योंकि पुत्र-प्राप्ति के लिए आपकी यह बुद्धि (संकल्प) धर्म के अनुकूल है (अतः यह अवश्य पूर्ण होगा)।' वह (दशरथ) राजा तब ब्राह्मणों के उस कथन को सुनकर संतुष्ट हो गए।
English Commentary
This shloka, from Sarga 8 of the Balakanda, concludes the dialogue between Maharaja Dasharatha and his preceptors. The first half of the verse provides the reason why the Brahmins gave the King such a strong assurance of success: 'yasya te dharmikī buddhiḥ iyam putrārtham āgatā'—this intention of yours for obtaining a son is entirely aligned with dharma (righteousness). According to the Brahmins, the King's desire for an heir is not purely for personal gratification but is also crucial for the continuation of the dynasty and the welfare of the kingdom, thus making it a righteous pursuit. A righteous endeavor is guaranteed to be successful. Upon receiving such clear approval and blessing from his preceptors, 'tataḥ tuṣṭo'bhavat rājā' (the King became satisfied). This satisfaction stemmed not only from the assurance but also from the confirmation that the path he had chosen was correct and destined to receive divine favor. The shloka establishes Dasharatha's righteous character, emphasizing that he sought to fulfill even his greatest desire only through scripturally mandated means and with the full approval of his spiritual guides.

यह श्लोक बालकाण्ड के सर्ग ८ का है और महाराज दशरथ तथा उनके गुरुजनों के संवाद को पूर्ण करता है। गुरुजनों (ब्राह्मणों) ने राजा को पूर्ण सफलता का आश्वासन क्यों दिया, इसका कारण इस श्लोक के प्रथम भाग में बताया गया है: 'यस्य ते धर्मिकी बुद्धिः इयम् पुत्रार्थम् आगता' अर्थात् आपकी यह बुद्धि, जो पुत्र-प्राप्ति के लिए है, वह पूर्णतया धर्म के अनुकूल है। ब्राह्मणों के अनुसार, पुत्र की इच्छा केवल व्यक्तिगत सुख के लिए नहीं, बल्कि वंश की परंपरा और प्रजा के कल्याण को ध्यान में रखते हुए की गई है, और इसीलिए यह धर्म-सम्मत है। धर्म-सम्मत कार्य निश्चित रूप से सफल होता है। गुरुजनों से ऐसा स्पष्ट अनुमोदन और आशीर्वाद मिलने के बाद, 'ततः तुष्टोऽभवत् राजा' (तब राजा संतुष्ट हो गए)। यह संतुष्टि केवल आश्वासन की नहीं थी, बल्कि इस बात की पुष्टि की थी कि उन्होंने जो मार्ग चुना है, वह सही है और देवताओं की कृपा प्राप्त करने वाला है। यह श्लोक दशरथ के धर्मपरायण चरित्र को स्थापित करता है, जहाँ वे अपने सबसे बड़े मनोरथ को भी शास्त्रोक्त विधि और गुरुओं के अनुमोदन से ही पूर्ण करना चाहते हैं।
