Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मम लालस्य मानस्य सुतार्थम् नास्ति वै सुखम् ।
तदर्थम् हयमेधेन यक्ष्ह्यामि इति मतिर् मम ॥१-८-८॥
mama lālasya mānasya sutārtham nāsti vai sukham |
tadartham hayamedhena yakṣhyāmi iti matir mama ॥1-8-8॥
Translation
Though my mind is longing for a son, verily, there is no happiness for me. Therefore, it is my intention (thought) to perform the Ashwamedha sacrifice for that purpose (for a son).

संतान की इच्छा से लालायित होते हुए भी मेरे मन में कोई सुख नहीं है। इसलिए, मेरी यह इच्छा है कि मैं पुत्र-प्राप्ति के लिए अश्वमेध यज्ञ करूँ।
English Commentary
This shloka is from the Balakanda, Sarga 8, Shloka 8 of the Valmiki Ramayana. In this verse, Maharaja Dasharatha of Ayodhya is addressing his preceptor, Maharishi Vasishtha, and other ministers. Maharaja Dasharatha has reached an advanced age but has not yet been blessed with a son to continue his lineage. He is expressing his deep inner anguish and despair. He clearly states that despite his intense longing for a son (lālasya mānasya), he finds no happiness whatsoever, as his deepest wish remains unfulfilled. Due to this profound dissatisfaction and the dire need for an heir, he expresses his firm resolve (matir mama) to undertake the great 'Ashwamedha Yajna' specifically for the purpose of obtaining a son. This statement underscores his sense of duty to his people and his solemn responsibility to maintain the royal tradition. This sacrifice became the foundation for the eventual birth of Lord Rama.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के बालकाण्ड, सर्ग ८, श्लोक ८ से लिया गया है। इस श्लोक में अयोध्या के महाराज दशरथ अपने कुल गुरु, महर्षि वशिष्ठ, और अन्य मंत्रियों से बात कर रहे हैं। महाराज दशरथ वृद्धावस्था में पहुँच चुके हैं, परन्तु उन्हें अभी तक कोई पुत्र प्राप्त नहीं हुआ है, जिससे उनका वंश आगे बढ़ सके। वे इस श्लोक में अपनी आंतरिक पीड़ा और गहरी निराशा व्यक्त करते हैं। वे स्पष्ट करते हैं कि एक पुत्र की प्रबल इच्छा (लालस्य मानस्य) के बावजूद, उन्हें किसी प्रकार का सुख प्राप्त नहीं है, क्योंकि उनकी यह कामना अधूरी है। इसी असंतोष और वंश की निरंतरता की आवश्यकता के कारण, वह पुत्र-प्राप्ति के उद्देश्य से 'अश्वमेध यज्ञ' जैसे महान अनुष्ठान को करने का अपना दृढ़ संकल्प (मतिर् मम) प्रकट करते हैं। यह कथन उनकी प्रजा के प्रति कर्तव्य और वंश-परंपरा को बनाए रखने के प्रति उनके गंभीर उत्तरदायित्व को दर्शाता है। यह यज्ञ भगवान राम के जन्म की आधारशिला बना।
