तत् अहम् यष्टुम् इच्छमि शास्त्र दृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
कथम् प्राप्स्यामि अहम् कामम् बुद्धिः अत्र विचिन्त्यताम् ॥१-८-९॥
tat aham yaṣṭum icchami śāstra dṛṣṭena karmaṇā |
katham prāpsyāmi aham kāmam buddhiḥ atra vicintyatām ॥1-8-9॥
Translation
Therefore, I desire to perform that (sacrifice) according to the action prescribed by the scriptures. How shall I attain my desire (son)? Let your intellect deliberate upon this.

इसलिए मैं शास्त्र सम्मत विधि से वह (यज्ञ) करना चाहता हूँ। मैं अपनी इस इच्छा (पुत्र) को कैसे प्राप्त करूँगा? इस विषय पर आप लोग विचार करें।
English Commentary
This shloka is also from Sarga 8 of the Balakanda and is a continuation of Maharaja Dasharatha's address to his preceptor, Maharishi Vasishtha, and his ministers. Having declared his resolve to perform the Ashwamedha sacrifice for a son in the previous verse, Dasharatha now seeks guidance on the execution of the task. The phrase 'śāstra dṛṣṭena karmaṇā' means 'by the action prescribed by the scriptures.' Maharaja Dasharatha insists that this great ritual, aimed at fulfilling his desire for an heir, must be flawless and performed strictly according to Vedic injunctions. His question, 'katham prāpsyāmi aham kāmam' (How shall I attain my desire?), reflects his deep yearning and impatience for a son. He humbly requests the assembled scholars to 'buddhiḥ atra vicintyatām' (let your intellect deliberate upon this), asking them to wisely consider and suggest the proper course of action. This also highlights his administrative wisdom, as he seeks the collective counsel of his Guru and advisors before undertaking such a momentous task.

यह श्लोक भी बालकाण्ड के सर्ग ८ का है और महाराज दशरथ द्वारा अपने गुरु, महर्षि वशिष्ठ, और मंत्रियों को सम्बोधित किया जा रहा है। पिछले श्लोक में पुत्र-प्राप्ति के लिए अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का संकल्प व्यक्त करने के बाद, दशरथ अब इस श्लोक में अपनी तत्परता और कार्य की विधि पर मार्गदर्शन चाहते हैं। 'शास्त्र दृष्टेन कर्मणा' का अर्थ है 'शास्त्रों में निर्देशित विधि से'। महाराज दशरथ यह सुनिश्चित करना चाहते हैं कि पुत्र की कामना पूर्ण करने वाला यह महान अनुष्ठान त्रुटिरहित और पूर्णतया वैदिक विधान के अनुसार संपन्न हो। वह प्रश्न करते हैं कि 'कथम् प्राप्स्यामि अहम् कामम्' (मैं अपनी इच्छा कैसे प्राप्त करूँगा), जो उनकी अधीरता और पुत्र के लिए गहरी लालसा को दर्शाता है। वह उपस्थित विद्वानों से 'बुद्धिः अत्र विचिन्त्यताम्' अर्थात् इस विषय पर भली-भाँति विचार करने और उचित मार्ग सुझाने का विनम्र अनुरोध करते हैं। यह उनकी बुद्धिमत्ता को भी दर्शाता है कि वह इतने बड़े कार्य को अपने गुरु और परामर्शदाताओं की सामूहिक बुद्धि के बिना नहीं करना चाहते।
