एतत् श्रुत्वा रहः सूतो राजानम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ।
श्रूयताम् तत् पुरा वृत्तम् पुराणे च मया श्रुतम् ॥१-९-१॥
etat śrutvā rahaḥ sūto rājānam idam abravīt |
śrūyatām tat purā vṛttam purāṇe ca mayā śrutam ॥1-9-1॥
Translation
Having heard this, the Sūta (charioteer and minister, Sumantra) spoke this to the King (Daśaratha) in private: “Let that ancient occurrence be heard, which I have heard in the Purāṇas.”

यह सुनकर सारथी (सुमन्त्र) ने एकान्त में राजा (दशरथ) से यह कहा: “वह प्राचीन वृत्तान्त, जो पुराणों में मैंने सुना है, उसे आप सुनें।
English Commentary
King Daśaratha was contemplating the performance of the Aśhvamedha sacrifice to obtain sons, and his learned priests had advised him to invite Sage Ṛṣyaśṛṅga to preside over it. In the preceding sarga, King Daśaratha had discussed this matter with his preceptors. This verse presents the statement of the Sūta (charioteer and minister) Sumantra following that discussion. 'Etat śrutvā' (having heard this) implies that Sumantra had listened to the entire conversation between the King and the officiating priests. Following this, he speaks to the King in private (rahaḥ), which indicates his position as a minister and his close relationship with the King. He seeks permission to narrate an ancient legend (purā vṛttam) related to Sage Ṛṣyaśṛṅga, which he had heard in the Purāṇas (purāṇe ca). Sumantra's objective is to reinforce in the King's mind the necessity and significance of Sage Ṛṣyaśṛṅga's arrival, as the birth of sons for King Daśaratha is assured only by his conduction of the sacrifice. This statement lays the foundation for the future events of this great epic.
