ऋत्विग्भिः उपदिष्टोऽयम् पुरा वृत्तो मया श्रुतः ।
सनत्कुमारो भगवान् पूर्वम् कथितवान् कथाम् ॥१-९-२॥
ṛtvigbhiḥ upadiṣṭo'yam purā vṛtto mayā śrutaḥ |
sanatkumāro bhagavān pūrvam kathitavān kathām ॥1-9-2॥
Translation
This ancient occurrence, which has been instructed (or suggested) to you by the R̥tvigs (priests), was heard by me before. The revered Bhagavān Sanatkumāra narrated this story previously.

यह वृत्तान्त, जिसके लिए ऋत्विजों द्वारा आपको (उपदेश) दिया गया है, वह मैंने पहले ही सुन रखा है। भगवान् सनत्कुमार ने पूर्वकाल में यह कथा कही थी।
English Commentary
This verse continues the address of the Sūta Sumantra to Maharaja Daśaratha. In the previous verse, Sumantra had urged the King to listen to an ancient story. Here, he establishes the significance and authenticity of that narrative. He states that this occurrence, the implementation of which has been suggested to the King by the R̥tvigs (Vasiṣṭha and other priests) ('R̥tvigbhiḥ upadiṣṭo'yam' - suggested by the priests), was known to him even before ('mayā śrutaḥ'). This correlation between Sumantra's knowledge and the priests' advice reinforces the King's confidence. Most importantly, Sumantra reveals the source of the story. He explains that this is no ordinary tale, but one that was narrated in the past by Bhagavān Sanatkumāra. Sanatkumāra is one of the mind-born sons of Brahmā and a great sage, whose word is considered a Purāṇa (ancient narrative) in itself. By establishing this divine source, Sumantra assures the King that his counsel regarding Ṛṣyaśṛṅga's arrival is scripturally grounded and this path will certainly succeed in achieving the objective of obtaining sons.

सारथी सुमन्त्र द्वारा महाराजा दशरथ को दिए जा रहे कथन को जारी रखता है। पिछले श्लोक में सुमन्त्र ने राजा से एक प्राचीन कथा सुनने का आग्रह किया था। यहाँ वह उस कथा का महत्व और प्रामाणिकता स्थापित करते हैं। वह कहते हैं कि जिस वृत्तान्त का अनुष्ठान करने के लिए (अर्थात् ऋष्यशृंग मुनि को बुलाने के लिए) ऋत्विजों (वसिष्ठ और अन्य पुरोहितों) ने राजा को सुझाव दिया है ('ऋत्विग्भिः उपदिष्टोऽयम्'), वह उन्हें पहले से ही ज्ञात है ('मया श्रुतः')। इससे यह सिद्ध होता है कि सुमन्त्र की बात ऋत्विजों की बात से मेल खाती है, जिससे राजा का विश्वास बढ़ता है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण यह है कि सुमन्त्र कथा के स्रोत को उजागर करते हैं। वह बताते हैं कि यह कथा कोई साधारण कथा नहीं है, बल्कि इसे भगवान् सनत्कुमार ने पूर्व समय में कहा था। सनत्कुमार, ब्रह्मा के मानस पुत्रों में से एक हैं और एक महान ऋषि हैं, जिनकी बात स्वयं में एक पुराण (पुरातन वृत्तान्त) मानी जाती है। इस प्रकार, सुमन्त्र राजा को यह विश्वास दिलाते हैं कि ऋष्यशृंग के आगमन से सम्बंधित उनकी बात शास्त्रों पर आधारित है और पुत्र प्राप्ति के उद्देश्य की पूर्ति के लिए यह मार्ग निश्चित रूप से सफल होगा।
