Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ते तु राज्ञो वचः श्रुत्वा व्यथिता विनत आननाः ।
न गच्छेम ऋषेः भीता अनुनेष्यन्ति तम् नृपम् ॥१-९-१६॥
te tu rājño vacaḥ śrutvā vyathitā vinata ānanāḥ |
na gacchema ṛṣeḥ bhītā anunyeṣyanti tam nṛpam ॥1-9-16॥
Translation
However, they (the Priest and Ministers), having heard the King's command, became distressed and, with bowed faces, started appealing to that King, saying: "We are afraid of the Sage, (thus) we should not go."

वे (पुरोहित और अमात्य) तो राजा की बात सुनकर दुखी हो गए, और झुके हुए मुख वाले होकर बोले: "हम ऋषि से डरे हुए हैं, (इसलिए) नहीं जाएँगे," और उस राजा को मनाने लगे।
English Commentary
This verse from the Ninth Sarga of Balakanda describes the reaction of King Romapāda's Priests and Ministers upon receiving the order to bring Sage Ṛṣyaśṛṅga. In the previous verse, the King had resolved to send them, having duly honored them. Upon hearing the King's command, they became 'vyathitā vinata ānanāḥ' (distressed with bowed faces). The central reason for their anxiety was that they were 'ṛṣeḥ bhītā' (afraid of the Sage). Here, 'the Sage' primarily refers to Ṛṣyaśṛṅga's father, Sage Vibhāṇḍaka, who was known for his fierce asceticism and quick temper. He guarded his son from contact with the outside world. The Priests and Ministers feared that if they brought the Sage's son deceitfully or without permission, the enraged Vibhāṇḍaka might curse them, bringing an even greater calamity upon the kingdom. Thus, they 'anunyeṣyanti' (began appealing) to the King not to send them for this task. This verse illustrates the power of asceticism and the fear it instilled in common people, while also underscoring the gravity of the difficult task the King had entrusted to them.
