अथ हृष्टो दशरथः सुमंत्रम् प्रत्यभाषत ।
यथा ऋष्यशृङ्गः तु आनीतो येन उपायेन स उच्चताम् ॥१-९-२०॥
atha hṛṣṭo daśarathaḥ sumantram pratyabhāṣata |
yathā ṛṣyaśṛṅghaḥ tu ānīto yena upāyena sa uccatām ॥1-9-20॥
Translation
Thereupon, the delighted Daśaratha replied to Sumantra: “Let the manner and the means by which Ṛṣyaśṛṅga was brought (to the kingdom of Anga) be described.

तत्पश्चात् हर्षित हुए राजा दशरथ ने सुमंत्र से उत्तर में कहा: “जिस प्रकार और जिस उपाय से ऋष्यशृंग को (अंग देश) लाया गया था, वह (उपाय) बताया जाए।
English Commentary
This verse from the Ninth Sarga of Balakanda reveals the great delight felt by King Daśaratha upon hearing from Maharishi Vasiṣṭha that Sage Ṛṣyaśṛṅga would arrange for the birth of his sons. 'Atha hṛṣṭo Daśarathaḥ' (Thereupon, the delighted Daśaratha) indicates his immediate shift from worry to hope, having gained faith in the Sage's spiritual power. He immediately turned to his charioteer and trusted minister, Sumantra. Daśaratha expresses his eagerness to know 'yathā Ṛṣyaśṛṅghaḥ tu ānīto yena upāyena sa uccatām' (the manner and the means by which Ṛṣyaśṛṅga was brought). The King's curiosity stems from the fact that the previous verses only mentioned that the officials had found a 'suitable means' and the involvement of courtesans, but the detailed method was not described. King Daśaratha now wishes to hear the full story and the clever stratagem used to bring such a great ascetic out of his hermitage without incurring the wrath of his father. This verse turns the narrative to a new segment, where Sumantra will proceed to narrate the fascinating and detailed account of Ṛṣyaśṛṅga's arrival.
