Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सुख अनिलोऽयम् सौमित्रे कालः प्रचुर मन्मथः ।
गन्धवान् सुरभिर् मासो जात पुष्प फल द्रुमः ॥४-१-१०॥
sukha anilo'yam saumitre kālaḥ pracura manmathaḥ |
gandhavān surabhir māso jāta puṣpa phala drumaḥ ॥4-1-10॥
Translation
This breeze is pleasant, O Sumitra's son! This time implies excessive passion (Manmatha). It is the fragrant month of Spring (Surabhi), when trees have brought forth flowers and fruits.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सौमित्रे! यह वायु सुखद स्पर्श वाली है। यह समय कामदेव (मन्मथ) को बढ़ाने वाला है। यह सुगंधित 'सुरभि' (वसंत/चैत्र) मास है, जिसमें वृक्ष पुष्पों और फलों से लद गए हैं।
English Commentary
Rama explicitly identifies the season as Spring (Surabhi mas), likely the month of Chaitra. He notes the sensory details: the breeze is tactilely pleasant (sukha anila), and the air is fragrant (gandhavān). However, he characterizes this time as pracura manmathaḥ—abounding in Manmatha (Cupid/Desire). This acknowledges that the environment is biologically and psychologically charged to induce love and passion. For a separated lover, the pleasantness of the breeze and the fragrance of the month are torturous, as they stimulate desires that cannot be fulfilled.

राम स्पष्ट रूप से वसंत ऋतु के प्रभाव का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। 'सुख अनिलो' (सुखद वायु) शारीरिक रूप से तो आरामदायक है, किन्तु 'प्रचुर मन्मथः' (काम वासना की अधिकता वाला) मानसिक रूप से विरही जन के लिए मारक है। 'सुरभि मास' वसंत (चैत्र) का सूचक है। गंध, स्पर्श और दृश्य—तीनों इंद्रियों के विषय यहाँ उद्दीप्त हैं। राम लक्ष्मण को बता रहे हैं कि काल (समय) भी उनके विरुद्ध है, क्योंकि वसंत संयोग का काल है, वियोग का नहीं।
