Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पश्य सानुषु चित्रेषु मृगीभिः सहितान् मृगान् ।
माम् पुनः मृग शबाक्षी वैदेह्या विरहीकृतम् ।
व्यधयन्तीव मे चित्तम् संचरन्तः ततः ततः ॥ ॥४-१-१०१॥
Paśya sānuṣu citreṣu mṛgībhiḥ sahitān mṛgān । Mām punaḥ mṛga śabākṣī vaidehyā virahīkṛtam । Vyadhayantīva me cittam sañcarantaḥ tataḥ tataḥ ॥ ॥4-1-101॥
Translation
Look at the deer accompanied by does on the colorful peaks. Wandering here and there, they seem to torment my mind—I, who am separated from Vaidehi, whose eyes are like those of a fawn.
हिंदी अनुवाद
विचित्र शिखरों पर मृगियों के साथ घूमते हुए इन मृगों को देखो। मृग-शावक (हिरण के बच्चे) जैसी आँखों वाली वैदेही से वियुक्त मुझ राम के चित्त को, इधर-उधर घूमते हुए ये मृग मानो व्यथित (घायल) कर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Rama observes the deer wandering on the picturesque mountain slopes ("sanushu chitreshu"). Crucially, the bucks are accompanied by does ("mrigibhih sahitan"). This sight of togetherness tortures ("vyadhayanti") Rama. He describes Sita as "mriga shabakshi" (fawn-eyed), drawing a direct parallel between the animals he sees and the wife he misses. Seeing the deer with their mates wandering freely ("sancharantah") emphasizes his own unnatural state of separation. The very creatures that remind him of her beauty also remind him of his loss, acting as innocent tormentors.

राम पशुओं के जोड़ों को देखते हैं—'मृगीभिः सहितान् मृगान्' (मृगियों के साथ मृग)। यह दृश्य उन्हें अपनी स्थिति की याद दिलाता है। वे स्वयं को 'विरहीकृतम्' (वियोगी बना दिया गया) कहते हैं। सीता के लिए वे 'मृग शबाक्षी' (मृग छौने जैसी आँखों वाली) विशेषण का प्रयोग करते हैं। विडंबना यह है कि जिन हिरणों को देखकर उन्हें सीता की आँखों की याद आती है, वही हिरण अपनी पत्नियों के साथ घूमकर राम को चिढ़ा रहे हैं। 'व्यधयन्तीव' (मानो वेध रहे हैं/घायल कर रहे हैं)—राम को उनका यह विहार बाण के समान चुभ रहा है।
