Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पद्म सौगन्धिक वहम् शिवम् शोक विनाशनम् ।
धन्या लक्ष्मण सेवन्ते पम्पाया वन मरुतम् ॥ ॥४-१-१०४॥
Padma saugandhika vaham śivam śoka vināśanam । Dhanyā lakṣmaṇa sevante pampāyā vana marutam ॥ ॥4-1-104॥
Translation
Laden with the fragrance of lotuses and Saugandhika flowers, auspicious and sorrow-destroying is the forest breeze of Pampa. Fortunate indeed are those, O Lakshmana, who enjoy it.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! पम्पा के वन की वायु कमलों और सौगन्धिक पुष्पों की सुगंध वहन करती है, यह कल्याणकारी (शिवम्) और शोक को नष्ट करने वाली है। वे लोग धन्य हैं जो इसका सेवन कर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Rama praises the qualities of the breeze (marutam) coming from the Pampa forest. It carries the scent of lotuses, is "shivam" (benign/auspicious), and is theoretically "shoka vinashanam" (destroyer of sorrow). However, Rama declares those who can enjoy it as "dhanya" (blessed/fortunate), implicitly excluding himself from that group. For a united couple, this breeze would indeed destroy sorrow/fatigue, but for the separated Rama, it is a source of envy. He recognizes the objective goodness of the breeze while lamenting his subjective inability to experience its healing power.

राम पम्पा की वायु के गुणों का वर्णन करते हैं—यह सुगंधित है और स्वभाव से 'शोक विनाशनम्' (दुख को मिटाने वाली) है। परन्तु विडंबना यह है कि राम के लिए यह वायु दुखदायी है। इसलिए वे कहते हैं 'धन्या... सेवन्ते'—वे लोग भाग्यशाली हैं जो (अपने प्रियजनों के साथ) इस हवा का आनंद ले पा रहे हैं। राम स्वयं को अभागा महसूस करते हैं क्योंकि जो हवा शोक का नाश करने वाली होनी चाहिए थी, वह उनके शोक को बढ़ा रही है। 'शिवम्' (कल्याणकारी) शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ विरोधाभास उत्पन्न करता है—वायु सबके लिए कल्याणकारी है, सिवाय राम के।
