किम् नु वक्ष्यामि धर्मज्ञम् राजानम् सत्य वादिनम् ।

What shall I say to the righteousness-knowing and truth-speaking King Janaka when he asks about Sita's welfare in the assembly of people?

जब धर्म के ज्ञाता और सत्यवादी राजा जनक जन-सभा (संसद) में मुझसे सीता के कुशल-मंगल के बारे में पूछेंगे, तो मैं उनसे क्या कहूँगा?
English Commentary
Rama is struck by the dread of facing King Janaka, Sita's father. He envisions a public setting ("jana samsadi" - assembly of people) where Janaka, described as "dharmajnam" (knower of dharma) and "satya vadinam" (speaker of truth), asks after Sita’s welfare ("prishta sitam"). Rama asks rhetorically, "What will I say?" This reveals his sense of failure as a protector. He feels he has failed to safeguard the trust placed in him by Janaka. The thought of admitting this failure to a man of such high moral standing amplifies his mental anguish beyond just romantic loss to social shame.

राम को अब सामाजिक और पारिवारिक मर्यादा की चिंता सताती है। वे भविष्य की कल्पना करते हैं—जब वे वापस जाएंगे और सीता के पिता, राजा जनक से मिलेंगे। जनक 'धर्मज्ञ' और 'सत्यवादी' हैं। भरी सभा ('जन संसदि') में यदि उन्होंने पूछा कि "मेरी बेटी कहाँ है?", तो राम क्या उत्तर देंगे? "मैंने उसे खो दिया"—यह स्वीकार करना राम जैसे रक्षक (क्षत्रिय) के लिए अत्यंत लज्जाजनक है। यह श्लोक राम के अपराध-बोध (guilt) और उत्तरदायित्व के भार को दर्शाता है। वे न केवल एक पति के रूप में, बल्कि एक जमाता (दामाद) के रूप में भी स्वयं को असफल मान रहे हैं।
