Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तया विहीनः कृपणः कथम् लक्ष्मण धारये ।
या माम् अनुगता रज्यात् भ्रष्टम् विहत चेतसम् ॥ ॥४-१-१०८॥
Tayā vihīnaḥ kṛpaṇaḥ katham lakṣmaṇa dhāraye । Ya mām anugatā rajyāt bhraṣṭam vihata cetasam ॥ ॥4-1-108॥
Translation
O Lakshmana! How can I, wretched and bereft of her, hold onto life? She who followed me when I was fallen from the kingdom and disheartened.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! जो (सीता) राज्य से भ्रष्ट और व्याकुल चित्त वाले मुझ (राम) के पीछे चली आई थी, उस (सीता) के बिना मैं दीन-हीन (कृपण) होकर प्राणों को कैसे धारण करूँ?
English Commentary
Rama describes his absolute desolation. He asks Lakshmana how he is supposed to survive ("katham dharaye") while being "vihina" (bereft) of her and "kripana" (wretched/pitiable). He emphasizes that Sita followed him when he was at his lowest—"rajyat bhrashtam" (fallen from the kingdom) and "vihata chetasam" (disheartened/mentally crushed). She was his strength when he lost everything else. Losing her now leaves him with nothing. The verse underscores that Sita was not just a wife but the anchor of his sanity and emotional stability during the trauma of exile.

इस श्लोक में राम की वेदना अपनी चरम सीमा पर है। वे स्वयं को 'कृपणः' (दीन/दया का पात्र) कहते हैं। वे उस समय को याद करते हैं जब उन्हें राज्य से निकाला गया था और वे 'विहत चेतसम्' (हताश/टूटे हुए मन वाले) थे। उस समय सीता ने उनका संबल बनकर उनका अनुसरण किया था। आज जब वह संबल ही नहीं है, तो राम का अस्तित्व खतरे में है। 'कथम् धारये' (कैसे धारण करूँ)—यह जीवन अब उनके लिए एक बोझ बन गया है। जिसने बुरे वक्त में साथ नहीं छोड़ा, उसका बिछड़ना राम के लिए मृत्यु समान कष्ट है।
